Todays show features a superb interview with when
Ujima reporter, Andrew caught up with her just after her latest performance at last weekend. We find out about Shy One's latest gigs plus her wicked new single electronic music producer and DJ Shy One released her new single titled 'Nort Wess' this week. The track was released via the South London label Touching Bass and has been described as a "choppy mix of fizzing electro and grimey mid-range synths". It is available on platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. 'Nort Wess' marks her signing to the Touching Bass label and is part of a process where she felt "compelled to slow down and declutter (both mentally and sonically)". Shy One also hosts the NTS Radio show Soup To Nuts NTS Radio. Huge thanks to Andrew for content!
We also hear some amazing performances from last nights NATURE VERSUS DATA charity fundraiser organised by Jimmy Galvin to raise crucial funds for the night featured an incredible array of Bristol legends including Mark Springer of Rip Rig & Panic fame, the amazing choir which featured Mark Ely who also did a solo performance. .vibes held their audience in the palm of her hand with an incredibly emotional and poignant performance of poems and violin solo's. We had films by activist, photographer & filmmaker also a powerful and empowering performance by Bristol's first Poet Laureate that included a surprised due with a esteemed host for the night, the trailblazing and of course with a glorious finale with performance by himself. With all proceeds going to BDP it was a night to be remembered with the beautiful venue The Mount Without filled with an incredible spell bound audience of friends, family new and old.

Tune into hear clips form this incredible night.

Community: Becoming Black and British - Bristol Edition of this amazing series by The World Reimagined captures the heart of a city shaped by resilience, belonging, and legacy. Through the memories of the Windrush generation and their children, this film reflects on what it meant and still means to build community, find identity, and create home in Bristol.

Community: Becoming Black and British - Bristol shines a light on the lived experiences of Black communities across the UK and the powerful influence of community organisations, youth leaders, and local changemakers.

This Bristol story sits alongside films from other cities, each exploring resilience, history, and the future of Black British identity.

As part of the project, young Black creatives were mentored by industry experts, gaining the skills to conduct interviews and shape the documentary through their own lens. Their work brings together stories from the Windrush generation, community elders, and younger voices, bridging generations through storytelling.

Filming took place in meaningful community spaces including the Malcolm X Community Centre, Pickle Factory, and Easton Community Centre, capturing the rhythm, warmth, and truth of Black British life.

Directed by Euella Jackson.

Watch. Listen. Remember.
The story of community lives on.

At the Bristol premiere of COMMUNITY: Becoming Black & British, award-winning musician Roni Size sat down with The World Reimagined co-founder Michelle Gayle for an inspiring in-conversation exploring creativity, community, and the legacy of Black Bristol.

The event was part of Triangle of Unity, The World Reimagined’s nationwide festival celebrating the power of shared history through film, music, and dialogue.

Much like previous conversations featuring Omar and Floacist, this exchange cultivated ideas on how art, identity, and activism continue to shape the Black British experience.

This Saturday 22nd November at 11am we are really looking forward to welcoming back the fabulous Swimout Podcast team for this really special homage to Bristol & Rivon Avon.

Vicki sets out to follow in her father’s footsteps and swim down the River Avon from Bath to Bristol. She is joined on this adventure by her wife Oonagh.

Along the way she meets up with her family for some reminiscing about her father, and talks to Johnny Palmer, a passionate swimmer and “disrupter” who inspires and enables many swims around Bristol. They also discuss swimming in the Avon with Luke and Charlie from All Aboard Watersports Bristol who organise swimming in the Bristol docks. Vicki gets help from CK SUP and Paddle at Newbridge outside Bath, and then has a refreshing swim with Bart, one of her father's rowing friends. Becca Drazin from the group Conham Bathing tells us about how much she likes her swim spot on the River Avon.

To end we hear a beautiful poem about the river by Mrs Meg Avon.

Find out how the swim goes….

Ujima Radio are so proud to support Project Zulu Choir by raising awareness of their tours and concerts, it has been a privilege to welcome the choir back again into the studio for live performances on air on The Word with Miranda Rae. Over three unforgettable weeks in May and June, the 2025 Project Zulu Choir Tour filled venues across the South West and Wales with joy, rhythm and powerful performances finishing off with a sell out Gala concert at Bristol Beacon starring Innocent Masuku.
