We stepped inside the incredible , one of three English stately homes loaning artwork from their 18th century owners for a major new exhibition at in The Hague, called The Grand Tour: Destination Italy.
- Grand Tours were rites of passage for the rich and powerful from the 17th to the early 19th centuries (Holkham’s 1st Earl of Leicester spent six years on his trip!), and Italy was an essential stop on any self-respecting tourist’s journey.
- These privileged adventurers had seriously big budgets for souvenirs; they bought high quality art and antiques to fill their grand houses. One man spent the equivalent of £38,000 on 24 paintings by Canaletto.
- Along with Holkham, (seen in photo 6) and Woburn Abbey (photo 7) have also loaned paintings, sculptures and other treasures to this blockbuster exhibition – the first of its kind in the Netherlands.
- Find out about the artworks, these houses, and the history of Grand Tours by clicking the link in our bio.
The exhibition runs from 18th September 2025 – 4th January 2026. Catch it if you can!
