Hello summer - issue 401 of H&A is now on sale, and it’s a travel special!

Here are five fascinating things we learned in putting the magazine together:

1. Louis Vuitton added a monogram to its canvas luggage in the 1890s, to prevent counterfeiting – ironically, it’s now one of the most commonly faked brands today.

2. Jacaranda plants, which are everywhere in Lisbon, were introduced from Brazil in the 19th century by botanist Félix de Avelar Brotero. Look out for the purple flowering trees if you visit the city in late spring or early summer!

3. In 1917, one man swapped his five-floor New York mansion for a Cartier pearl necklace and $100. This is just one quirky fact from Emma Longstaff’s feature on collecting pearls…

4. The mantra for maximalists should be ‘less is bore’ – a quote from architect Robert Venturi. We dive into maximalism with our edit of the best homeware buys.

5. Critically endangered heritage crafts in the UK include figurehead and ship carving, piano making, and watchmaking, all on the Red List by . Grab the summer issue to learn more about the talented experts keeping these skills alive.

Wherever you’re reading this issue from (be it a beach, garden, train carriage or pavement café), we hope you’ll be inspired by our picks of antiquing hotspots, maximalist décor, antique luggage, luxury rail journeys and more.

If, like us, you can’t get enough of those green walls in the living room, you can thank - they’re in the shade Invisible Green.

We stepped inside the incredible , one of three English stately homes loaning artwork from their 18th century owners for a major new exhibition at in The Hague, called The Grand Tour: Destination Italy.

- Grand Tours were rites of passage for the rich and powerful from the 17th to the early 19th centuries (Holkham’s 1st Earl of Leicester spent six years on his trip!), and Italy was an essential stop on any self-respecting tourist’s journey.

- These privileged adventurers had seriously big budgets for souvenirs; they bought high quality art and antiques to fill their grand houses. One man spent the equivalent of £38,000 on 24 paintings by Canaletto.

- Along with Holkham, (seen in photo 6) and Woburn Abbey (photo 7) have also loaned paintings, sculptures and other treasures to this blockbuster exhibition – the first of its kind in the Netherlands.

- Find out about the artworks, these houses, and the history of Grand Tours by clicking the link in our bio.

The exhibition runs from 18th September 2025 – 4th January 2026. Catch it if you can!

2. You can stay in a converted Canadian school bus in Devon, with stunning vineyard views. No bus pass required at !
3. Disney animation art is in high demand with collectors right now, according to .
4. We’re a little bit in love with All Things Considered, the brilliant book by Emilio Pimentel-Reid () – it gives a peek inside the homes of 16 artists, creatives and designers.
5. has offered free stays to 60 charities this year.

Issue 399 of H&A (July 2025) is now on sale! Here are five things we learned in putting the magazine together:

1. Medieval Brits bathed more than you’d expect, and their bathhouses were steamier in more ways than one!

2. Karl Lagerfeld’s estate sale included a pair of black crocodile-leather boots, a photo album of his beloved cat, , and a collection of 55 fans (sold for €19,200 at Paris).

3. Surprisingly, ‘Bunny’ isn’t actually Bunny Campione’s birth name, despite what we initially believed! We spoke to the expert about her collection of toy bunnies, going under the hammer soon at .

4. To hide post-war wear and tear, the walls of Lyons tea shops were covered in prints designed by prestigious artists. If only more of today’s cafes had such arty décor…

5. The classic book series Thomas the Tank Engine, by the Reverend Wilbert Aubry, didn’t start with Thomas – he turned up a year later (we promise this isn’t a reference to trains running late!).

This month’s cover is taken from our tour of Sharon Foskett’s () Cornish cottage, which channels rustic chic and is filled with treasures from brocantes and flea markets. Trust us, you’ll love it!

Today we celebrate 80 years since VE Day, when Germany surrendered to the Allies; war in Europe finally ended, after nearly six years of fighting and millions of lives lost.

To mark VE Day, we take a look at our feature on collecting military medals.

‘When somebody puts a set of medals on your desk and you start to research the person who was awarded them, you often uncover an incredible story. It’s like being a detective,’ says Adam Chapman, a medal dealer at Harland Military Antiques.
