The October issue of H&A is now in the shops, and there’s loads to dive into, from decorating with dark colours to discovering Polish mid-century furniture and Whitby jet. Here are some of the most interesting things we learned in compiling the magazine:

1. On average, museums only display two per cent of their collections. We peek inside the new V&A East Storehouse and David Bowie Centre to see how they display their artefacts.

2. Fordite, also known as ‘Detroit agate’, is a material made from solidified layers of paint, taken from old car factories. You can find it upcycled into jewellery, sold by the likes of .

3. During the Temperance Movement in the 19th century, cocoa houses replaced pubs as social spaces. It’s hot chocolate season now, so why not indulge in a cup?

4. Living with a view of Rio de Janeiro’s Sugarloaf Mountain is exactly as dreamy as you’d expect. Fashion designer shows us round her radiant apartment in this issue.

5. combines Cornwall’s lime burning heritage and community spirit with a South Korean tradition. Don’t miss their new wild sauna in St Ives.

Our beautiful cover was shot by at a Grade II-listed Gloucestershire house owned by Will McQuitty-Munnis and Alessandro Fragiacomo. went to explore the property for H&A.

Our September issue (402) of H&A is out today – it’s your ideal companion for a calm, quiet moment. Here are five interesting facts we learned in putting it all together:

1. On 15th August (today!), nearly 300 vintage Vivienne Westwood pieces will go on sale at in North Yorkshire.

2. NASA invented Memory Foam, so you’ve got space exploration to thank for that super-comfy mattress.

3. In past centuries, many people had two sleeps per night, waking in between for a few hours. It was also considered perfectly normal to share beds with strangers at inns (as mentioned by legendary diarist Samuel Pepys).

4. The Isle of Wight has a Garlic Festival, run by its very own . In fact, it takes place this weekend!

5. Marilyn Monroe’s dress from The Seven Year Itch fetched $5.7m at auction. It came from fellow Hollywood talent Debbie Reynolds’ collection of props and costumes, sold by .

Our gorgeous cover image is a glimpse of interior designer Sarah Davenport’s () home in Lincolnshire.

Read all about it in an extract from Colourful Homes for the Soul, by and , in the magazine.

Alison Coldridge’s warm family home ‘reminded me of a gingerbread house,’ she says. The mid-1800s brick and flint property, near Wi******er, is now filled with treasures in natural textures and tones, harking back to Morocco and the Middle East, coupled with an English floral feel.

She has gathered pieces from her travels and her love of car boot sales, plus there’s the extra special touch of artwork by her mother-in-law, Giuse Maggi.

Hello summer - issue 401 of H&A is now on sale, and it’s a travel special!

Here are five fascinating things we learned in putting the magazine together:

1. Louis Vuitton added a monogram to its canvas luggage in the 1890s, to prevent counterfeiting – ironically, it’s now one of the most commonly faked brands today.

2. Jacaranda plants, which are everywhere in Lisbon, were introduced from Brazil in the 19th century by botanist Félix de Avelar Brotero. Look out for the purple flowering trees if you visit the city in late spring or early summer!

3. In 1917, one man swapped his five-floor New York mansion for a Cartier pearl necklace and $100. This is just one quirky fact from Emma Longstaff’s feature on collecting pearls…

4. The mantra for maximalists should be ‘less is bore’ – a quote from architect Robert Venturi. We dive into maximalism with our edit of the best homeware buys.

5. Critically endangered heritage crafts in the UK include figurehead and ship carving, piano making, and watchmaking, all on the Red List by . Grab the summer issue to learn more about the talented experts keeping these skills alive.

Wherever you’re reading this issue from (be it a beach, garden, train carriage or pavement café), we hope you’ll be inspired by our picks of antiquing hotspots, maximalist décor, antique luggage, luxury rail journeys and more.

If, like us, you can’t get enough of those green walls in the living room, you can thank - they’re in the shade Invisible Green.

We stepped inside the incredible , one of three English stately homes loaning artwork from their 18th century owners for a major new exhibition at in The Hague, called The Grand Tour: Destination Italy.

- Grand Tours were rites of passage for the rich and powerful from the 17th to the early 19th centuries (Holkham’s 1st Earl of Leicester spent six years on his trip!), and Italy was an essential stop on any self-respecting tourist’s journey.

- These privileged adventurers had seriously big budgets for souvenirs; they bought high quality art and antiques to fill their grand houses. One man spent the equivalent of £38,000 on 24 paintings by Canaletto.

- Along with Holkham, (seen in photo 6) and Woburn Abbey (photo 7) have also loaned paintings, sculptures and other treasures to this blockbuster exhibition – the first of its kind in the Netherlands.

- Find out about the artworks, these houses, and the history of Grand Tours by clicking the link in our bio.

The exhibition runs from 18th September 2025 – 4th January 2026. Catch it if you can!
