Well, 3 months after my Composing for Video Games Course finished, I was incredibly elated to receive a personal letter of recommendation written by my course tutor (and veteran video game composer) Jason Graves! I personally like the touch where he mentions we're not related, to show that I'm not a Nepo-Baby ๐Ÿ˜†

This was my favourite introduction to Wild China with Ray Mears - a brilliant series for which I was lucky enough to be the Composer. I've always wanted to travel around China - and I really got a feel for it while working on the show and seeing the raw footage, which will tide me over until I finally get to make the trip!

Assignment No. 5 - Final Assignment
Mark - 40/40

This was the final assignment for my course - we had one week to produce 3 minutes of music - 1 minute of thematic / 1 minute of low intensity exploration / 1 minute of high intensity fight music. On top of that we had to make 3 transition stingers to blend between the states as it would be in a game (ie. press start out of the menu screen / blend low intensity into high intensity fight scene).

This assignment was specifically scored to the footage, and we had to follow the timecode at the top of the screen, to mimic the behaviour of a gamer engaging certain scripted moments whenever they wander into the appropriate area / or with the appropriate button press.

On top of all the other live instruments - I had to practice my whistling, which I have literallty never paid attention to before. but I practiced at work, and spent over an hour getting a passable whistle for the low intensity/ exploration section.

Assignment No. 4 - Pitch Demo
Mark - 30/30

This was an assignment to write a demo to a brief from a video game company (ie. as if we were pitching for work).

I chose to write a theme for a futuristic Spy RPG.

During the course we were encouraged to do as much live recording as possible. Which I already do, but I wanted to go one step further.
So I actually ended up recording myself playing VIOLIN on this piece, despite having NO IDEA how to play violin.

I did some double stop string risers - which you can hear at 18 seconds / 36 seconds etc.
And I played some staccato violin which you can hear during the section lasting from 20-37 seconds.

Again - this was not composed to this video, but the video suits the tone I was aiming for.

This is my submission for our Assignment No.1 - Composing Assignment No. 1 - Music for Video Games course with Jason Graves.
Mark - 30/30

The task was to make exploration music for a video game - IE. Something that plays in the background when you're roaming but not engaged in any significant game event.
I chose the option to compose a theme in the style of "Sci Fi Exploration".

Before I even composed a note, I knew I wanted to do something unique with guitars - which was, record different single notes, multiple times which would build up to make a chord. So I'd have 3-4 tracks of individual guitars notes but played together it would sound like a chord.

This means I could pan and adjust each individual note within the chord individually. And my final step was to take all those recordings and reverse them, so they became a crescendo swell.
You can hear these at 6 seconds / 11 seconds, and onwards throughout the video.
Again - this music was not composed to this video, but the video is there to give an indication of the sort of setting which this composition would suit.

This is my submission for our Assignment No.2 - Composing Music for Video Games course with Jason Graves.
Mark: 28/30 - I lost 2 marks because I had 17 seconds before I brought in my main melody

I chose the option to compose a theme in the style of "Dystopian Horror".

I'm not a big fan of AI images and videos, but this video by Rolando Cedeno de la Cruz very much encapsulates what I was seeing when i wrote this piece. (it is not music written to video, I have found video afterwards and added it to music).

I've recently finished a 2 month course in 'Composing Music for Video Games', led by a musical hero of mine Jason Graves (no relation ๐Ÿคจ). He's a 2 time BAFTA winning composer behind the scores for games such as Tomb Raider (2013 reboot), Dead Space, Far Cry Primal, Call of Duty, Until Dawn, Still Wakes the Deep and countless others.

I studied a lot of his 'making of' soundtrack videos when I first started composing music for TV. Especially his deep dives into his iconic Dead Space soundtracks, so getting to know him and learn from his decades of knowledge has been incredible.

Among the 5 assignments I managed to score 128 out of a possible 130 points, which earned me the nice certificate you see below.

Keep your eyes peeled as I will very shortly be sharing the music I composed for the assignment during this course.

I'm learning some new software (Unreal Engine). I usually make artwork, visuals and music videos in Blender, but I am keen to get familiar with Unreal Engine as well.
I am starting with some tutorials - this one is based on a great tutorial by the youtube channel Magnet VFX.

Music is an old unused demo I made for a TV series I was working on.

I've been inactive recently as I've had a few commissions offline to focus on.
I've been building a little soundcloud portfolio to scout for composing work.
Here's a piece I composed in the Cyberpunk vein.

BWAAAM, I was trying to share some composing tips about how Hans Zimmer composes his epic film scores, but he trounced all over it.

ARTWORK - Tombstone Comission Pt. II

And here is THE RESULT. Artwork I made based on the request in the previous post.

All made in Blender - I sculpted the ground and added grass & moss, modelled different varieties of tombstones and crosses, then figured out how to carve text into the tombstone model, and added wear and damage. The Robot Arm I used a free 3d model available in Blenderkit.

Then I added some 3D fog and some 2d cloud planes, and dotted various area lights and spotlights around.
