FROM THE ARCHIVES: It's five years since the Gipsy Patch Lane railway bridge was replaced, which necessitated hugely disruptive full and partial road closures spanning a period of more than two years.
Things didn't go to plan when the pre-constructed new bridge was being rolled into position; the huge structure became stuck in soft ground and it took 15 days to free it. Consequently the main Bristol to South Wales railway line ended up being closed for 29 days rather than the 13 days originally planned.
Read this in-depth article from the November 2020 issue of the Stoke Gifford Journal magazine (with postscripts), which includes photos of the old bridge and amazing drone shots of the new bridge being moved/freed => https://www.stokegiffordjournal.co.uk/2020/11/08/gipsy-patch-lane-mega-bridge-move-trouble-soft-ground/
