When answers were unknown, we observed the waters closely—counting plastics, noting insects, worms, and coins. We imagined how it would be if the waterways had feelings, thoughts and needs. We mimicked the stance of the cormorants, and told stories inspired by the streams. We birthed rivers and married trees.

🚨NEW Bristol Unpacked: how can we redistribute wealth – and should we do it ourselves?

Taxing and redistributing wealth to reduce inequality is an idea popular on the left, and is being pushed by some politicians including Green Party leader Zack Polanski.

But it’s loathed by others who believe people should be able to hang on to what they have, whether that’s earned or inherited.

This week we’re joined by Frances Howe, co-founder of the Bristol Redistro collective, which asks people who have more money than they need to voluntarily chuck some of it into a pot. It’s then divided up by a panel of locals to fund grassroots groups.

How does this work, and what difference does it make? Why is it different from giving to charity? And with the cost of living biting, why should people be giving up their wealth in the first place? We get into these questions, and more on the latest Unpacked…

🎧 Two episodes of We've Got Your Boy are now live.

After three teenage boys were fatally stabbed in Bristol within 18 days in early 2024, we started asking questions about the systems that failed them.

Episode 1: "Hurt People, Hurt People" examines the institutional response to serious youth violence and why we need to address root causes, not just react to tragedies.

Episode 2: "They Can't Meet His Needs" traces the school to prison pipeline—looking at how poverty, exclusions, managed moves and the SEN crisis are pushing young people towards violence.

Episode 3 drops this Thursday.

🚨NEW Bristol Unpacked: can Bristol North West MP Darren Jones turn around Labour’s sinking fortunes?

The government’s approval ratings are tanking after a series of policy flip-flops, scandals and communications failures. Reform is on the rise everywhere, while the Greens and Your Party tempt younger voters.

Into this mess steps Darren Jones MP, the Bristol North West MP who has recently been appointed as Keir Starmer’s chief assistant, responsible for helping execute the PM’s agenda and get his messaging across.

In the first episode of the new Unpacked season, Jones talks to Neil Maggs on going from a childhood in Lawrence Weston to becoming a cabinet minister, the challenges of government and his new efforts to engage under-30s on YouTube.

How’s that going to work? Should Starmer fall, would he fancy the top job? And where did his Bristol accent go? Tune into the new series of Unpacked to find out…
