A popular stereo recording technique is called 'Mid/Side' or MS. 🎤♾️

Instead of recording two equal left and right channels, a central cardioid (unidirectional) microphone and a side-facing figure 8 (bi-directional) microphone is used.

By summing the centre mic with the side mic, the left channel is created. Then the centre mic is summed with the *phase-inverted* side mic to create the right channel.

The main benefits of this technique are:
- stereo width can be controlled by changing the level of the side mic
- when summed to mono, the side mic cancels itself out so there are no phasing issues.

This leads to a very versatile and useful recording, which makes it a very popular technique.

This month's Sound of the Month was recorded in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. It's common to hear these sounds echoing around the mountainside.

The mix is the final step in audio post-production. 🎚️

A dubbing mixer (also known as re-recording mixer) brings together all the elements of a project's soundtrack into a cohesive final mix. They balance dialogue, effects, atmospheres and music into a seamless, immersive soundscape that enhances storytelling and meets technical delivery standards for cinema, television or streaming.

A great mix should sound consistent everywhere - from a smartphone speaker to a full Dolby Atmos cinema system - and achieving that takes deep technical expertise and creative precision.

Wounded Buffalo's experienced mixers work closely with clients in our fully equipped surround theatres to craft powerful, polished mixes with award-winning depth, clarity and creativity - bringing every project to life.

Happy Halloween!! 🎃 Here’s a spooky throwback to 1990, when our Tim Owens, Kate Hopkins and Max Bygrave worked on the TV series She-Wolf of London! The story follows an American graduate student in London after a werewolf has bitten her 🐺

We love the theme song and highly recommend a watch if you’re in the mood for some comedic horror tonight!

It’s never too late to teach a Wounded Buffalo new tricks! Earlier this year, we received bespoke training from Maru Training to streamline our workflows, sharpen our skills and earn our Pro Tools Specialist Certification.

After completing our training, the team at Maru interviewed our Lead Audio Technician – Barnaby Malins – in which he shares what the experience was like. Check it out here: https://audio.marutraining.com/blog/interview-with-barnaby-malins-wounded-buffalo

We thoroughly recommend Maru Training and Andy Hagerman. They nailed it, accommodating a highly skilled team with varying knowledge spanning over 30 years.

Cardioid – the most common pattern, it's most sensitive to the front and rejects sound from the back. (Super-cardioid and hyper-cardioid are more directional but reject less rear sound).

Omni-directional – picks up sound equally regardless of direction, so it's good for personal mics and some ambience recording.

Bi-directional (Figure-8) – captures sound from the front and back, rejects the sides. Used in mid-side recording techniques.

Shotgun – extremely directional, so common in film, broadcast, or anywhere that needs clarity from a distance.

All of these pickup patterns are good for different purposes and it's important to choose the right one!

In 1897, Guglielmo Marconi transmitted a morse code message reading "Are you ready" from Flat Holm Island to Lavernock Point in Penarth, Wales, later transmitting from Brean Down Fort in Somerset, a distance of 9.9 miles. In less than 10 years, developments across the world led to the first radio broadcast.
