Fashion & Film: La Piscine
-
Dir. Jacques Deray, 1969
-
‘The costumes blend in with the surroundings, and at the same time perfectly embody the style of the ‘60s and the visionary Parisian movement of the times, led by André Courrèges, Paco Rabbane and Pierre Cardin, that cut away superfluous material, decoration and introduced geometry and new materials for fashion.’

-
Dir. Wes Craven, 1996

‘It’s testament to the iconic status of Ghostface that when MTV announced they wouldn’t be using the mask in their TV reboot, an online furore erupted which suggested a Scream series without Ghostface would be like a Halloween update without Michael Myers.’

Brilliant Failure: Marie Antoinette
-
Dir. Sofia Coppola, 2006
-
‘It’s not a stretch to say that if a male filmmaker had taken on this story and told it with such brashness and symbolic chutzpah that they would have been lauded. Hopefully the groundswell of cultural change that is growing will ensure more people go back to this delightful film and regret listening to the boo-boys of the Croisette and not embracing it when it first arrived.’

Podcast Episode 4: ‘Seconds’, Now available to stream!👂🍿🎞
- - -
In this episode Gabriel and Tom are joined by .conolly co-author of a new book about the 1966 John Frankenheimer film Seconds; a nightmarish journey into sci-fi paranoia that is now considered a classic of post-McCarthy era American cinema.
Part noir thriller and part body horror, the film – which initially flopped at the box office – is a richly dense, and bleak portrait of the mid-life crises of masculinity aroused by the 1960s counterculture. Taking sharp aim at the consequences of blind consumerism, Seconds was way ahead of its time in predicting the impact on our lives of corporate surveillance, technology and a desire for self-transformation - making it a must-see for all film fans.

Dir. Mark Waters, 2004

‘Like many other teenage movies, from The Breakfast Club (1985) to Clueless (1995), Mean Girls brought in another wave of problematic youths in a lively light. In a social media world where self-promotion is applauded, the theme merely changed from in-person to virtual. Perhaps thousands of Mean Girls drama plays out now in your nearest Snapchat story or TikTok feed.’

Double Bill: Rashomon and After Life
-
Akira Kurosawa, 1950
Hirokazu Kore-Eda, 1998

‘Both Rashomon and After Life emphasize individual responsibility and concern for others. In Rashomon, the woodcutter takes care of the baby abandoned in the ruins of the city gate by its poverty-stricken, desperate parents. In After Life, Iseya sees his refusal to make a choice as his way of assuming responsibility for his own life.’
