Hello! This is VIKA taking over BOP Bristol! 🤸 And talking about the some of the decisions made behind behind the scenes of a VIKA book.

There are two distinct phases in photo-editorial. Editing, which decides what belongs, and sequencing which decides how the pictures work together.

Normally, before I edit a book, I spend time with the photographer until I can hear their voice in the work. With Faye, I couldn’t do that, so I spoke to the women she photographed instead.

I interviewed five of her models about how she worked, how she directed them, and what it felt like to be photographed by her. Their answers changed the way I looked at the pictures.

Then we printed everything out and worked on the floor, moving images around, trying different combinations, and gradually finding the sequence.

One of the less visible parts of making Between Women has been getting Faye’s photographs to print with the depth and softness of the original palladium prints.

Tritones give us a wider tonal range than printing in duotone. The challenge is that the image moves through RGB on screen and CMYK in the Epson proof, to three physical inks on press.

VIKA have spent a lot of time bringing those systems closer together so the proofs can guide small, controlled adjustments before printing.

Hello! This is VIKA taking over BOP Bristol, looking at some of the decisions made in the making of a VIKA photobook.

Originally our working title was Legacy. It made sense, as the book began with Faye’s own selection of photographs from across thirty years of her work, and she had only just passed and that sense of purpose was forefront.

But working titles often change as a book develops.

As VIKA edit the images, we work with both the text and design concepts, and get close to the work. This means we can see what sums up the project a little more objectively, we can see what is memorable, and also what works typographically.

Titling has become part of the design process on several of our recent books.

With this book, BETWEEN WOMEN emerged as we worked with the interviews with Faye’s models, who speak throughout the book.

These women talk about the trust Faye built, the way she worked, and the relationships that continued long after the photographs were made.

Eleven papers. Two printing methods. But which comes closest to platinum?

Platinum and palladium is a process with the greatest tonal depth and the gentlest tonal range in photography.

Faye photographed the palest skin, holding chiffon, pearls, glittering eyeshadows, against dark, heavily textured backgrounds: stone, ivy, elm bark. That contrast means the tonal range is unusually wide.

Matching that in a printed book meant running a full wet proof: testing paper stock and ink method, duotone against tritone.

We tested eleven stocks, generously sponsored by GF Smith papers and Fedrigoni and ran duotone and tritone side by side, pushing the mid-tones as far as they could go.

Tests like this take a village: paper suppliers willing to sponsor the paper, a talented reprographics team, and a printer Taylor Brothers willing to keep changing stock on the same plate.

Every paper grips differently, sits differently, moves through a press differently. Years of trust on the press allows this to happen.

This is VIKA taking over BOP_Bristol for a deep dive series into Faye Yerbury's BETWEEN WOMEN.

To understand the photographs, we talked to the women in them.

Victoria interviewed five of Faye's models at length. Their voices and their description of Faye's photographic evolution form the narrative of the book.

Three of those interviews run through the book, interspersed with the photography. The book is edited by who has also written an introductory text on Faye's photographic work.

What comes through, time and again and again, is how Faye made the women feel: loved, empowered, respected, and safe.

Hello! This is VIKA Books on BOP Bristol for a deep dive series into our latest book. BETWEEN WOMEN, looking at just some of the decisions made in the making of a VIKA photobook.

Today, please meet Faye Yerbury FRPS FMPA FSWPP (1942–2025). 💛

Faye dedicated her photography to the creation of classical black-and-white studies of the female form — women in dialogue with stone, silk, architecture and sky, hand-printed by her in platinum and palladium. A former hairstylist who became a leading photographer of her generation alongside her husband Trevor E. R. Yerbury, Faye photographed the way she styled: with total care for the woman in front of her.

The edit for BETWEEN WOMEN began with Faye's own. In 2023, across thirty years of her archive, and in the knowledge she had terminal cancer, Faye reflected on her photographs — her selection, her story. She had no narrative in mind; it was enough to choose.

After Faye died in 2025, Trevor Yerbury commissioned VIKA to finish the book, to draw on more of her archive to carry the story further, using her edit as the starting point for a wider retrospective.

Everything in the book serves that edit. Every picture Faye chose made it in.

BETWEEN WOMEN will be on display at BOP26. Thanks to BOP Bristol and the Martin Parr Foundation.

Welcome! My name is Victoria Forrest and I am director of VIKA. VIKA is an independent design studio working across Graphic Arts, Fine Art Publishing and Creative Technologies.

We create photobooks that are tactile, thoughtful, and made in close collaboration with our artists.

In this series, we are taking a look behind the scenes at one upcoming book: Faye Yerbury’s 'BETWEEN WOMEN'.

BETWEEN WOMEN showcases a lifetime of photography, compiled in close collaboration with Faye shortly before her death in 2025, and thereafter with Faye’s husband, photographer .

VIKA works at every stage of the journey, turning images, ideas and memories into portable galleries and lasting legacies.

Faye’s favourite colour was yellow. And in the interviews, several of the models remembered a gold, sparkly eyeshadow Faye loved to use — the kind that made their eyes look incredible.

VIKA pulled together cloths and papers around those colours: yellows, golds and warm neutrals, with different textures and levels of sheen and sparkle.

Swatches also had to work with the Pantone inks inside the book and with the warmth of the paper stock.

Samples came in from Ratchford, Manifattura del Seveso and Winter & Company. Victoria made an initial selection and sent that to Trevor Yerbury to edit down.

The final choice was made when two of Faye’s models came to visit for the weekend. They chose the swatches they thought Faye would love most.
