THE SHROUD - AFFLICTION EP (DROOGS018)

A1. CROSS
A2. AFFLICTION
AA1. OUROBOROS
AA2. RESTLESS MINDS

Clearly giving a firm nod to some of drum & bass’ founding fathers, ‘The Shroud’ delivers a masterclass in drum & bass fundamentals on the Affliction EP for UVB-76 Music affiliate label, DROOGS.

First up, ‘Cross’ nose dives into unknown (or maybe known?) depths, occasionally breaching the surface with some shuffles for breath recodifying a classic standard. Next, title track ‘Affliction’ is a drum and bass rhythm slasher, if you can spot the influences keep your hand up but don’t tell the class. ‘Ouroboros’ ups the ante with nose bleed drums and the schizophrenic panic the label has always confidently pushed while ‘Restless Minds’ wraps up what feels like a really complete release.

Available to Pre Order now on vinyl/digital formats from the Bandcamp - All other regular stores to follow next week.

PESSIMIST - PONY BOY CLUB EP (UVB76-029)

A1. PESS ONE
A2. PONY BOY CLUB
AA1. NRG-97
AA2. UNDER SURVEILLANCE

Pessimist’s signature sound is truly at home on his latest EP - Pony Boy Club for UVB-76 Music.

Clinically precise, fully scoped, pin-point accurate drum’s drive opening track ‘Pess One’ where less is more, but definitely more than enough. ‘Pony Boy Club’ follows with driving kicks, big reverbs, and laser bleep bursts cutting through the dark. ‘NRG-97’ twists out a familiar rave palette with a Pessimist twist, harking back then ricocheting straight back, forward into the future. The EP wraps up with ‘Under Surveillance’, claustrophobic, paranoid, nasty.

All in all, one of Bristol’s baddest is back on the firm!

DROOGS016 : Holsten - Burn EP

Holsten makes his return to DROOGS, in the form of a 4 track EP, showcasing some of his best material to date!

A1. Burn
A2. Service Kru
AA1. Twisted Music
AA2. Projectiles (Overlook Remix)

Juno Records Review

Bristol-based provider of tough and sinewy drum & bass, Holsten has proved himself one to watch with successes on UVB-76 Music, Hotline and Rupture, not to mention a clutch of releases on the essential label, Droogs.

This EP sees him offering up four battle weapons that lean towards the glory days of techstep.

Opener ‘Burn’ goes for apocalyptic bass and a hardstepping outer shell, finished off with nicely unsettling sonics. ‘Service Kru’ is the roasting Amen-led roller, with Dillinja-esque sidewinding edits, kung fu samples and ravey stabs. Flip it over for ‘Twisted Music’, tense and edgy rather than full on blasting, while the Overlook remix of ‘Projectiles’ steams its way to the run out groove with the kind of dystopian intensity that fans of classic No U-Turn will be very comfortable with.
