Throwback Friday.
This ring came up after a strong easterly storm caused a local beach to get stripped in 2020, the intensity of the storm exposed bedrock and removed a few feet of sand in places higher up the beach.
A few local detectorists including myself were doing back to back tides. I had some great finds over that weekend including this ring with the Vanquish and the v8 coil its not the biggest ring but i was up against some tuff competition and it proves you dont need to spend the earth in this hobby to find but the sand returned almost as quick as it went and so did the chance of finding.
There seems to be less and less casual loss with the decline of coins, less people wearing gold and dwindling visitor numbers to many once thriving victorian coastal towns here in the UK.
Low spots, cuts and erosion are the keys to unlocking older history at the beach, many people hear the news of incoming storms and wince.
The more dedicated beach detectorists flick the switch to there charger lead and checks out high and low water levels. I've never been fussed about times if its 2am so be it, im still going to be there.
Even with all the talk of Climate change intensifying storms making them stronger, wetter, and potentially more frequent, they seem to be further apart than they were a decade ago.
The only saving grace is increased rainfall means more movement on estuary locations.
Learning more than one beach really is the key to finding, especially if your coastline offers a choice of directional beaches so your not tied to storms coming from one direction.
There's often far more history hidden along your coastline than many detectorists realise and with a little research, patience you can get away from just dry sand wandering.
Roman, hammered coins, bronze age and everything in-between, its all there if you invest the time. If your new to the hobby and finding permissions hard to get, hit your local beach, just take away everything you find and be responsible.
The beach isn't for everyone I know, if you fall in that category next time your at the beach with family spare a thought for those of us that often pull out stuff that's bad your feet and chuck a few quid out so we can get a pasty on the way home 🤷 and you can watch your family enjoy the beach.
Thx for reading and Good luck if your out.
Happy Friday
