William Thompson Recreation Centre, Burnley

A photograph of the front of the Thompson Centre in Burnley. The centre was later demolished and the facilities moved to a modern, multi-use venue in 2006 (St Peter’s Centre).

The centre was opened in 1974 at a cost of £1.25 million, which was donated by William Thompson who belonged to a local textile producing family. The centre contained a baby pool, a diving pool and a large swimming pool. It also catered for other sporting activities that took place in two large sports halls, including badminton and squash.
