Review of The Lion , The Witch and The Wardrobe

At The Regent Theatre in Hanley last night, I found myself swept away into the magical and captivating retelling of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. CS Lewis’ classic tale was brought to life on stage in a behemoth of puppetry, dance, song, and heartfelt storytelling.

The production remained faithful to the spirit of Lewis’s story, offering the audience a captivating, creative and emotionally powerful theatrical experience.

From the recreation of a sombre war-torn London, to the cold and frosty landscapes of Narnia, the production sets the bar high in terms of visual inventiveness. The Witch (portrayed magnificently by Ffion Haf) delivers a terrifying yet charismatic and captivating performance, with key scenes throughout the show that literally took my breath away.

Suitable for most audiences (perhaps not the very young due to the complexity and realism of the puppetry) the Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe delivers on all fronts; scenes of fear and retribution are soon dissolved into humourous and witty exchanges from the Professor and between forest animals, and the might and power of Aslan the Lion brings an almost ethereal presence to the stage. I could hear a pin drop as we witnessed the tragic scenes of Aslan (played by Stanton Wright) succumbing to the Witch before being later reincarnated in a catalyst of light, sound and music. This particular part of the adaptation of the tale for stage created a poetic, heartfelt experience for the audience.

The entire cast delivered a heartfelt and strong performance. The dynamics of the four siblings - Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter
were delivered with a child like wide eyed realism, before unravelling the greater moral depths of the tale as the production reached a show stopping finale.

Another showstopping production at the Regent! The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe runs until Saturday 7 June.

Review of & Juliet , Regent Theatre, Hanley until Saturday 17th May

Well, I’ve seen some masterpieces in my lifetime, especially at the ever popular , always sold out , Regent Theatre in Hanley , ( thinking Jesus Christ Superstar and Chitty Chitty Bang on Bang to name but a couple ) but I’ve NEVER seen an audience quite so enthusiastic and happy to watch anything like last night when I had the fortunate chance to go to see
‘& Juliet’

This is a modern musical masterpiece .

If you like a lovely story then you’ll love this .
In fact , there are three , all different , love stories going on all at once.

It is the story of what would or could happen if Juliet , well , didn’t do what we know William Shakespeare had her do , way back in the fourteenth century.

What would happen if she took control , for once , of her own destiny?

Would she end up as Candy Staton once sang , another lost and lonely wife ?

The spilt stories of her fate are played out magnificently by a young exuberant skilled cast, with relevant newcomer Geraldine Sacdalan as Juliet . Crikey this young lady can sing , act and dance. One to watch out for !

Aided and abetted by her caring, quick witted nurse of old ( Sandra Marvin) , her best friend May (the very talented Jordan Broatch)and Anne Hathaway herself , played magnificently by Lara Denning, the will she / won’t she continues with surprise after surprise .

Packed with huge hits including Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and the Backstreet Boys, but keeps cleverly connected to the Bard.

I have to mention the vocal and acting skills of singers Jay McGuiness ( The Wanted ) and Lee Latchford-Evans ( Steps ) as part of a Bois Band including Kyle Cox ( Francois) , Jordan Broatch (May ) and ‼️spoiler alert ‼️! Benjamin Jackson Walker ( Romeo )
How I hear you ask ?
Well. You’ve just gotta go and watch it ! It’s on at the Regent until Saturday 17th May .

My hands now hurt from clapping so hard and for so long ! What a treat.
Catch it whilst you can

Review of Showdown -
New Vic Theatre

Upswing Presents: Showdown
New Vic Theatre
08.05.2025
SIX ACROBATS. ONE WINNER. WHO WILL BE THE “NEW FACE OF CIRCUS”?
Get ready for Showdown! This high-energy spectacle combines jaw-dropping circus stunts with razor-sharp humour in a one-of-a-kind competition where the audience is invited to vote for their favourite. Six fearless contestants push their limits in a no-holds-barred race to the top, all for the promise of a single prize.
Set during the final of a fictional, X Factor-esque TV show, Showdown introduces us to six contestants all vying for the chance to become “The Face of Circus”.
The show, created by performance company Upswing, made its initial debut at the Chamäleon Theatre in Berlin in 2024 and premiered in London in May 2025 ahead of a 3-month UK tour which began this week at the New Vic Theatre.
In true reality show style, the show starts with our ringmaster host, played by Rhys Hollis, entering through the audience dressed in gold and setting the scene for what we’ll see over the course of the next 70 minutes. We’re introduced to the finalists of the competition, all dressed in a different rainbow colour and referred to only by the colour of their outfit rather than a name.
The stage space is left empty to allow for the acrobatic performances, with the show’s title lit up in neon behind them. The bold colours used in the costumes really drew my attention to the performers, each wanting to show off their skills and win the all-important audience vote.
The ringmaster’s interactions with the contestants quickly moves from banter to barbed, seeing him and the “Circus Authorities” frustrated at the first sign of dissention or a show of personality from any of the finalists.
The circus performances themselves were absolutely breathtaking. Gracie Hill set an instant high standard with her trapeze work, shortly followed by Rebecca Solomon on the rope, where her “death drop” stopping inches from the ground drew gasps from the audience.
Shane Hampden, Loris de Via and Kussyl Amara had a spectacular showing on the teeterboard (essentially a seesaw on steroids). We were so close to the action that we could hear them calling to each other to signal their next move, one of the first displays of the contestants truly working as a collective rather than individually.
When the show went to a short “break”, we were treated to what I think was the performance of the night; Jaide Annalise on the cyr wheel (best described to you and me as a giant metal hula hoop). Every move she made looked effortless, to the point where I started to think “I reckon I could have a go at that” before remembering that she is a trained professional and I can’t even spin a plastic hula hoop around my waist.
I walked into the theatre having no idea of what to expect from the performance, and walked out utterly blown away by the skill I’d just seen. Upswing is only at the New Vic until Saturday 10th May with performances running just over an hour per show. Catch it while you can, I’d watch this over Britain’s Got Talent any day!

Review of The Last Quiz Night on Earth
New Vic Theatre, Newcastle under Lyme until Saturday 1st March 2025.

Who doesn’t love a good pub quiz ?
Old , young , serious or light- hearted? Sober, or not so much ? (think Christmas party revellers glistening with Yuletide sherry fuelled enthusiasm)

I’m sure many readers and listeners have participated in a good old pub quiz.

Originating from a 1867 word meaning ‘an old looking person’ , and with the first reported pub quiz according to the Guinness Book of Records in 1945, quizzing is so very quintessentially English .
A sense of friendship and community together for a common purpose. To win.

The concept of this interacting play is unique.
We, the audience, are in The Four Horsemen pub alongside the actors participating in ,on what is going to be the last night on Earth , an ordinary everyday occurrence in British life- the pub quiz.

Where would You spend your last night on this planet?

Outside, the sirens are wailing.
Government emergency broadcasts are blaring. But Kathy and Rav are determined to share their last evening with the pubs customers, well, quizzing.

Lisa Gorgin splendidly plays Kathy. A stereotypical hard working matriarch landlady, gregarious, Glitzy and yet vulnerable, seen when the brother who has been missing in her life returns after 20 years to spend this last night together. She plays this part like she has lived the pub life with strong, steely wit and confidence.

The brother, Bobby, played marvellously by Hollywood’s Sam Redford returns as the prodigal ‘son’, trying to win back the approval of big sis using Sonny and Cher as a sentimental prop. Does he succeed? You’ll have to go and see!

Rav (Ayan Philip), Kathy’s excited young employee and The Quizmaster. The linchpin to any good quiz and the unsung hero of any good pub quiz. Eager to please his boss, but interrupted by the return of an old flame- delightful , ditsy Fran played charmingly by Pria Kalsi. Her flawless quick witted charm and humour engulfs the whole theatre leaving the audience asking the question , will they / won’t they get back together on this last evening on Earth ?

This play is a Hoot. If you like a good old pub quiz , go see it .
If you just like a good play , go see it !

And to end . Did we win, Alison and me ? Well let’s just say , beans beat us to the ( respectable) 2nd place …..
Oh well there’s always the next time …. ( except there isn’t !)
