This didn’t start with Labour. That’s the problem.

Successive governments have spent years expanding the state while pretending the wider economy will somehow keep picking up the bill.
The Conservatives left office with public-sector employment already rising. In June 2024 it was up 76,000 on the year, with central government employment up 120,000.

Labour has continued that direction. Public-sector employment now stands at 6.21 million, central government employment is at a record 4.08 million, and 18% of UK employment is in the public sector.

Meanwhile, the latest PAYE estimate shows 145,000 fewer payrolled employees than a year ago. That August figure is provisional, but the direction is hardly encouraging.

This is what decades of governments with no serious plan for the size of the state looks like.
Keep expanding government. Keep squeezing the economy expected to finance it. Then act surprised when the sums become harder to balance.
Different government. Same underlying problem.

I’ve just had my Facebook feed absolutely carpet-bombed with this rubbish.

Same image. Same headline. Same dramatic “SOMETHING HUGE IS COMING!” nonsense. Page after page after page, all appearing within roughly the same hour. I stopped taking screenshots because I genuinely got bored of it.

And this is exactly how this stuff spreads.

People see the same claim six or seven times from different pages and start thinking, “Well, everyone’s reporting it, so there must be something in it.”

No. You’ve just seen the same recycled post six or seven times.

That isn’t evidence. It isn’t journalism. It isn’t confirmation. It’s a graphic designed to make you click, share and speculate about something it hasn’t actually explained.

I’ve blocked every single one of these pages that appeared in my feed.

If somebody has genuinely got “something huge” to announce, then announce it. Give people the evidence. Show the documents. Give a date. Give some actual information.

Until then, this stuff is just engagement farming.

And people wonder why social media is such a mess.

If it wasn't for X id have no idea who I was 🤣🤣

I find it absolutely fascinating how many people just make things up about someone in their own head, decide it must be true, then carry on as if they've uncovered some great secret.

Apparently I'm Jewish now. I'm actually Christian, born and bred in Suffolk, but why bother checking when you can just invent a biography that fits whatever argument you're trying to have?

And I genuinely think this explains a lot about how some people deal with politics.

They don't start with facts and form an opinion. They start with the opinion, then build an entire version of reality around it.

Politician they dislike? Everything they do must have some sinister motive. Person online disagrees with them? Just invent their background, beliefs or motivations and attack that instead.

You're no longer arguing with the actual person or the actual facts. You're arguing with a character you've created in your own head.

Social media has made this incredibly easy.

And apparently today, I've discovered an entirely new religion I didn't know I had. 😂
