Nunney Castle is a medieval castle located in Somerset, England.

Built in the late 14th century by Sir John de la Mare.

Sir John was a figure of relatively modest means who was beginning to enjoy royal favour. The new castle displayed his growing power in the locality.

The tower formerly stood within a larger courtyard enclosed on three sides by a wall and on the fourth by the brook. Within the courtyard there were probably several service buildings.

Nunney Castle was extensively modernised in the late 16th century, probably by Richard Prater, a rich Londoner who bought the castle sometime after 1560.

The castle remained in the possession of the Prater family until the Civil War, when it was besieged and ruined by order of Parliament.

The great tower is the earliest stone structure in the castle and one of the earliest stone defences in Britain.

This secure stronghold had windows only on the safe riverside.

Three building periods can be distinguished.
NORMAN: 1067-1115

Originally this was a two-storey tower.

This gloomy lower room, lit only by three small windows, was reached either by the door behind you or by outside stair through the main tower
doorway (above left).

A wall stair led up to the main ceremonial chamber above; this had larger windows (of which one survives), and decorative
arcading around the other walls.

THE MARSHALS: 1219-45
The younger Marshals modified the first floor, inserting fine new windows and creating private apartments at the far end.

They also heightened that end of the tower, supporting its gable on a splendidly decorated arcade.

ROGER BIGOD: 1293-1300
Roger Bigod extended the upper storey over the remainder of the tower. A gallery built on the riverside effectively separated the two baileys.

The castle is notable for its strategic position on a hilltop, offering commanding views of the surrounding countryside.

It was initially built by William FitzOsbern, a key ally of William the Conqueror.

By the 12th century, it became associated with the powerful Mortimer family, one of the most influential noble families in medieval England.
