FIRES & BARBECUES ‼️

Yesterday, a barbecue was left burning on Hednesford Hills, which ignited the surrounding grass and began to spread across the dry heath. Luckily, the fire was caught in time before getting out of control and spreading towards an area where our cattle are held.

This is just a reminder that fires and barbecues are not permitted on the site. Please refrain from lighting them, as if not caught in time, they can very easily have a devastating impact on the landscape.

We appreciate that this is more the few than the many, therefore, thank you to everyone that shows respect on our nature reserves.

NEW image of Cannock Town Centre's redevelopment plans

A critical stage has been reached in the development of Cannock town centre following the awarding of £20 million of Levelling Up Fund money by the Government nearly 12 months ago.

With considerable `behind the scenes` work taking place in recent months, Cannock Chase Council now needs to take its next steps, legally and formally with all and any affected parties, and begin a process of land acquisition around the town centre’s disused and unsightly former multi-storey car park and towards Church Street.

CANNOCK CHASE: Earlier today, officers from Rugeley assisted the Bomb Disposal Unit carry out a controlled explosion after a live WW1 Mk2 Hand Gr***de was found by a member of public on Cannock Chase.

The member of public is very lucky after they mistakenly picked it up and moved it from it's original location to a public car park and only after the pin fell out of it realised they were in danger, thankfully it did not detonate.

If you ever come across something you believe to be an explosive, please DO NOT pick it up, instead leave it in situ, move away from the item - 100 metres away if you can, make others in the area aware and tell them to move away also and call 999 as soon as you can.

Statement from Cannock Chase Council, Staffordshire County Council, Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent CCGs

Temporary emergency accommodation for asylum seekers in Cannock

This week a hotel in Cannock has started receiving a group of asylum seekers at the request of the Home Office. The asylum seekers are being cared for by Serco as part of an arrangement with the Home Office.

The Home Office does not comment on numbers or detailed accommodation locations of people seeking asylum, and the protocol is that any temporary accommodation is not disclosed.

Across the county, local authorities and their partner organisations have received similar requests to find emergency accommodation for asylum seekers, many of whom have fled their own countries to escape conflict and persecution, while full assessments of their situation are carried out.

Cannock Chase Council, as the host local authority in this instance, has been preparing for their arrival with Staffordshire County Council, Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent CCGs, to manage what will be a temporary stay at the hotel. None of the asylum seekers will be housed permanently in the District.

The local authorities and our partners have a duty of care to look after the health and wellbeing of all those seeking asylum while they are in our District. This has involved the fire and rescue service visiting the premises to ensure fire and safety arrangements meet their requirements, local police officers speaking to the immediate community to provide reassurance and the NHS available to provide medical support as necessary.

We understand the issue of people seeking asylum to the UK may raise concerns. We would simply ask that the residents of Cannock Chase be kind to these visitors during their brief stay. They are here in emergency circumstances for a matter of weeks as their claims are processed by the Home Office.

Thank you

At approximately 11am on Sunday 6 June, a controlled collapse demolition event using explosives will take place at Rugeley Power Station which will bring down the four Cooling Towers. It is being managed by ENGIE as developers of the site.

The structures are made of concrete and 117m high. To protect everyone on site and in the local area an exclusion zone will be in place before, during and immediately after the collapse. Because of the height of the structures the exclusion zone will extend onto the A51 so a road closure, with clearly marked diversion, will be in place for the event. This has been planned with Cannock Chase Council, Lichfield District Council and Staffordshire County Council to minimise potential disruption.

The initiation and collapse may be heard off site, any noise will be over very quickly, and any dust will be controlled. Road sweepers will be available, however, it is anticipated these won’t be required.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions unfortunately there is no public viewing area. A livestream will be made available so members of the public can safely view the event – details will be made available next week which we will share with you. The police will be in attendance and have asked that people consider the latest COVID-19 restrictions as these will be enforced.

There will be one more, smaller scale explosive demolition event before completion of the demolition programme later in the year.

Last month, site owner ENGIE was granted outline planning permission from ourselves and Lichfield District Council to transform the Power Station site once demolition is complete, into a sustainable mixed-use development of 2,300 low carbon homes including employment space, parkland, and a new all-through school.

With great sadness, Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people".

Speaking at Downing Street, the prime minister added: "He helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life."

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history. (Pictured below at their wedding)
