Canonbie SWI had their first session of the new season on Thursday 18th.
Liz Walters presented the badges to our new President Nicola Donald.
The talk on Scams & Keeping Safe was given by P.C. Lee Barnfather who has served in the police force for 18 years.
He gave a very interesting talk on all types of fraud from cold callers by phone and at the door to online scams and romance scams. AI is becoming so sophisticated now, making it difficult for many to differentiate between a genuine caller and scammers.
His advice was to always be vigilant, never sharing banking details, and not be polite. If anything happens you’re not happy about either hang up, or close the door.
Competitions were Stay Safe Poster and a key ring.
Poster: 1st Catherine Lithgow
2nd Diane Hope
Keyring 1st Pauline Greener
2nd Elizabeth Kinstrey.
The evening concluded with a quiz relating to TV detectives and the phonetic alphabet.
Next meeting is October 16th when Christine Beaty is giving a hands on beading class.

It was the SWI Dumfriesshire Federation Show on 17/18th May.
So much talent was on show.

It was very successful for Canonbie SWI with Canonbie winning the Challenge cup in handcrafts for an institute over 20 members. A fabulous achievement with only 4 members submitting entries, Liz Walters, Gillian Lamont, Viv Blyth and Karen Pearson.

Our President Liz Walters won the May MacCrmick trophy for most points in the handcraft section.

The next show will be in another 2.5 years

Canonbie SWI meeting on 17th April was our Open Evening, with about 50 people attending from Longtown WI, Nicholforest WI, Newcastleton SWI, Ewes SWI, Westerkirk SWI, Rigg SWI, Waterbeck SWI and Creca SWI.
Our speaker for the evening was Fiona Armstrong who gave an informative and enjoyable talk on her duties of Lord Lieutenant of
Dumfries.
Lord Lieutenants were introduced by Henry VIII to organise an army that could be used during war. It was their duty to feed and cloth this army.
Nowadays the Lord Lieutenant’s duties are more ceremonial with close ties to the military, veterans, reservists and cadets. Other duties also includes representing the monarch at various local events.
It wasn’t until 1956 that the 1st woman Lord Lieutenant was appointed.
Thanks to Fiona was given by Nicola Donald.
The competition of the evening for Canonbie SWI members and visitors was a photo taken in Dumfries & Galloway.
Results were:
Canonbie SWI
1st Catherine Lithgow
2nd Elizabeth Walters
Visitors:
1st Roman Bowman (Nicholforest)
2nd LorraineMorton (Ewes)
