Wales Screen Summit / Copa Cyfryngau Cymru

Wales Screen Summit / Copa Cyfryngau Cymru AN INDUSTRY LEADING EVENT PUTTING WALES AT THE CENTRE OF UK PRODUCTION

With the imminent threat of privatisation over Channel 4, the BBC license fee questioned and S4C awarded a settlement from the government, there is no time like the present to analyse and discuss the many implications of this and the rapid growth of the screen sector in Wales through our inaugural, Wales Screen Summit 2022. It will be a productive place for the creative industry in Wales to meet U

K and international commissioners to pitch ideas, broker co-productions and work together on shaping the future growth and continued success of production in and from Wales. It will also be a platform for the industry to celebrate many of the successes that our indie sector and local broadcasters have achieved to date and announcements for future collaborations and new game changing commissions through our industry recognised media partners, Broadcast. The Wales Screen Summit (WSS)/Copa Cyfryngau Cymru will become a calendar staple for creatives working on productions in Wales and beyond. In time, our hope is that it will become as popular as Sheffield DocFest or the Edinburgh TV Festival. Bringing together like-minded people from all walks of the broadcast and film industry to celebrate, discuss and prepare the shape of the screen sector in Wales within the global industry. The capital city has now become the third largest media sector in the UK, and we feel that the time has come to rightfully claim our place in the TV event calendar. This event will set the tone and the benchmark of quality that will become synonymous with the WSS for years to come.

🔥 “Now is the time to fight for public service broadcasting.” 📺

That was the rallying call from Tim Davie, Director General of the BBC as he closed this year’s Wales Screen Summit.

Tim painted a “mixed picture” of the current media landscape: yes, competition is fierce, costs are rising, and platforms like YouTube are commanding more of our time. But the opportunity has never been greater. Why? Because the need for trusted, home-grown storytelling is stronger than ever.

💬 “Pursuing truth with no agenda. Boy is that needed now,” Tim said.

From natural history to investigative journalism, public service content continues to deliver what global platforms can’t: depth, trust, and connection to communities.

🏡 He also pushed for moving production out of London - not as a token gesture, but as a smart strategy to deliver value and rebuild trust with audiences across the UK.

🚨 And the message was clear: the BBC can’t take its place for granted.
“YouTube are on the march,” he warned. “You’ve got to be on your toes.”

& Fun Fact - Tim Davie’s tipple of choice? Penderyn whisky 🥃 👀 - especially after a brisk run through the Welsh Hills. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

🎬 Day 2 - & that’s a Wrap! 🎬

What an incredible couple of days it’s been. A huge thank you to our sponsors, production and event partners, producers, roundtable hosts, crew, hosts, chairs, speakers, delegates - and the many, many more who made this year’s summit such a success. The energy, insight and passion you all brought truly made it a showstopper.

The Welsh screen sector has never felt more exciting - and if there’s one word that captures this year’s summit, it’s collaboration. Let’s keep working together to strengthen, grow and celebrate this vibrant industry.

Who knows what the future holds… but one thing’s for sure: we’ll be back, and we can’t wait to hear all about your next big (or small!) project, partnerships and productions.

But for now, WSS 2025 – over and out! 👋🎥🌟

🔥 Think like a creator. Take more risks. Build more formats. Be brave enough to post 🚀

That was the challenge from Jordan Schwarzenberger - co-founder of Arcade Media and manager of The Sidemen, speaking at this year’s Wales Screen Summit. Jordan urged broadcasters and producers to step outside traditional comfort zones and think the way digital creators do:
🎥 Test ideas quickly.
💡 Learn from data and audience feedback.
📱 Build formats that live and breathe on YouTube, TikTok and other platforms - not as cut-downs, but as true originals.

That’s where audiences are moving - and staying. Not just Gen Z, but older viewers too. The opportunity now is to be present where attention already lives. He pointed to creators like Amelia Dimoldenberg (Chicken Shop Date) as proof that big ideas don’t need big budgets - just creative conviction and consistency.

Jordan’s message to the industry: 🌱 Plant the seeds now for the next 10 years. It’s not too late. Be where the audiences are. 🎤

🔥 Fireside Chat with Eve Myles at Wales Screen Summit 2025 🔥

What an incredible conversation with one of Wales’ most talented and inspiring actors, Eve Myles 🎭 - in conversation with BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip at the Wales Screen Summit in Cardiff.

Eve opened up about her journey from Torchwood’s Gwen Cooper to Keeping Faith, and her latest gripping role in BBC One’s The Guest. She spoke honestly about the challenges women face in finding strong, complex roles, and how that nearly led her to leave acting for medical school! 🩺

“When you play someone as strong as Gwen Cooper… it’s difficult to come away from that or for people to see you differently. It’s definitely getting better for female-led drama.” 💪

Eve described her character in The Guest as “complex and challenging” - “like the flip of a coin”, both childlike and monstrous. 👏 Her passion for craft, empathy for her characters, and respect for writers like Russell T Davies (whom she called “a showrunner extraordinaire”) shone throughout. ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the Parkgate Hotel for two days of powerful discussions, networking, and storytelling that continue to shape the future of Welsh film and television. 🎬🌍
