🔥 “Now is the time to fight for public service broadcasting.” 📺
That was the rallying call from Tim Davie, Director General of the BBC as he closed this year’s Wales Screen Summit.
Tim painted a “mixed picture” of the current media landscape: yes, competition is fierce, costs are rising, and platforms like YouTube are commanding more of our time. But the opportunity has never been greater. Why? Because the need for trusted, home-grown storytelling is stronger than ever.
💬 “Pursuing truth with no agenda. Boy is that needed now,” Tim said.
From natural history to investigative journalism, public service content continues to deliver what global platforms can’t: depth, trust, and connection to communities.
🏡 He also pushed for moving production out of London - not as a token gesture, but as a smart strategy to deliver value and rebuild trust with audiences across the UK.
🚨 And the message was clear: the BBC can’t take its place for granted.
“YouTube are on the march,” he warned. “You’ve got to be on your toes.”
& Fun Fact - Tim Davie’s tipple of choice? Penderyn whisky 🥃 👀 - especially after a brisk run through the Welsh Hills. 🏴
