TAP is hosting a freelancer forum this December, offering an opportunity for freelancers working across the TV industry to hear about the work they’ve been doing, their future plans, and share your views.

What is TAP?

Formed in 2023 in response to Jack Thorne’s McTaggart Lecture, TAP (The TV Access Project) is a collective of nine UK broadcasters and streamers working towards a substantive and permanent structural shift in access provision for Disabled talent across the television industry.

Their goal is full inclusion by 2030.

The session will include BSL interpreters and live captioning. You can also share any additional access requirements on the registration form.

Whether you prefer to keep your camera off and listen, or actively participate and ask questions, TAP wants everyone to feel comfortable joining the conversation.

This is a chance to hear about their recent work, understand what comes next, and help ensure the experiences and needs of freelancers are part of the conversation about making the television industry more accessible and inclusive.

We’d like to highlight important research by Beth Johnson, Dave O’Brien, Laura Minor, Anna Viola Sborgi and the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds, published in Media, Culture & Society.

‘Sacrificial merit: Working time, commitment and inequality in UK television production’ explores how long hours, unpaid work and constant availability have become measures of professional commitment, and how these expectations reinforce inequality.

Not everyone has the same ability to make these sacrifices. Financial security, social class, disability and caring responsibilities can all affect who can afford to accept unpaid work, remain constantly available and access career opportunities.

When progression depends on how much someone can sacrifice, opportunity is not equal. A percentage of the workforce risks being excluded or pushed out, while those with greater financial security and fewer barriers are better placed to succeed.

The research raises important questions about class inequality, accessibility and fairness, challenging the industry to value skills and experience rather than a person's capacity for sacrifice.

CIISA has launched its new independent whistleblowing service for the creative industries.

CIISA provides a route for workers across film, TV, music and theatre, including live performance, to raise concerns about workplace behaviour.

Concerns may include bullying, harassment, discrimination, victimisation and health and safety risks.

CIISA can record and analyse reports to identify wider patterns, systemic issues and risks across the industries. It cannot resolve individual employment disputes or guarantee action on every report.

If you don’t feel safe speaking up at work, CIISA may offer another route to raise your concerns. Reports may qualify for legal protection, depending on the circumstances.

We’d like to highlight this report examining how class inequality is reproduced in UK television drama.

Some key findings:

- 61% of 49 participants got their current role through personal networks, compared with just 8% through open advertising.

- Intermittent contracts, long hours and low-paid early-career roles can make it harder for those without financial support to sustain a career.

- Despite increased production outside London, participants reported that senior creative decision-making remains concentrated in the capital, with regional workers facing longer gaps between contracts and fewer routes to progression.
