Rally driver Elfyn Evans has returned home after becoming the first Welsh driver to become world rally champion.

Evans was welcomed by thousands of fans at a celebration event in Dolgellau.

The 37-year-old has previously been a five-time runner-up in the championship.

On 4 October he beat Oliver Solberg by just five points at the championship in Italy - becoming Britain's first world rally champion for 25 years.

"I'm still hungry to try and achieve more in the sport and my approach won't change," he said.

Rally driver champion Elfyn Evans returned home today after becoming Britain's first world rally champion for 25 years.

The 37-year-old from Dolgellau in north-west Wales has previously been a five-time runner-up in the championship.

On 4 October he beat Oliver Solberg by just five points at the championship in Italy.

He said being champion wouldn't change much in his day to day life.

"Life at home is exactly the same, we still have the same battles to get the kids to school every morning as any other family," he said.

"I will continue to give my best, current or past form won't alter that. I'm still hungry to try and achieve more in the sport and my approach won't change."

Wales' performance in international tests for 15-year-olds has fallen further behind other UK nations.

Pisa results showed that academic performance levels are worse here than elsewhere in the UK.

The results this year mean Welsh 15-year-olds are about two years behind England's in reading, science and maths. In reading, they also trail teenagers in Scotland and Northern Ireland by a year.

It was a day of royal pageantry and protest in Cardiff Bay as the King and Queen marked a new era in Welsh politics.

King Charles III officially opened the Senedd's seventh term, during his first official meeting with First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth since Plaid Cymru formed the Welsh government.

Outside, anti-monarchy protesters chanted: "Not my King".

King Charles III addressed Members of the Senedd in Welsh as he officially opened the new term of the Senedd.

The King took part in the ceremony for the first time since becoming monarch and was joined by Queen Camilla.

It was also the first opening of a Senedd term since Plaid Cymru became Wales' largest party and took over the running of the Welsh government.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have arrived in Cardiff to officially open the new term of the Senedd.

It is the seventh ceremonial opening of the parliament since law-making powers were devolved to Wales in 1999.

It is also the first opening of a Senedd term since Plaid Cymru became Wales' largest party and took over the running of its government.

The King will take part in the ceremony for the first time since he became monarch.

A number of protestors can be heard shouting "not my King" as the King arrived.

When Caroline Bailey was suffering with sharp, stabbing pains in her stomach, she thought it was being caused by her contraceptive coil.

In severe pain, the 54-year-old went to her GP, desperate to have it removed, only for scans to reveal it was in fact a 13cm (5in) tumour pressing against her coil.

She was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, in June 2023 and feared she might not live for another two years.

Now, with no evidence of disease after chemotherapy and surgery, she said: "I absolutely think that the coil saved my life, which is mad."

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will officially open the Senedd's seventh term on Thursday during a visit to Wales.

It will be the first time the monarch will have visited the Welsh Parliament since 2024, and the first official meeting with Rhun ap Iorwerth since he became Wales' first minister.

The visit comes as it emerged Wales' national poet would not be taking part in ceremony as planned, after Senedd officials rejected the poem she had written for the event.

King Charles will give a speech to the Senedd before meeting a number of invited guests, including 10-year-old Noah Jones, whose great-grandfather survived the 1966 Aberfan coal tip disaster.
