Open Borders Without Stability Is a Risk!

I believe in Pan-Africanism, but I don’t support the idea of removing borders across Africa, at least not blindly.

Countries are not the same. Botswana, for example, has invested heavily in education, infrastructure, and peace. We have strong laws, stable governance, and we’ve worked hard to build a safe and functioning society. These things didn’t happen by chance.

We also manage our land and resources responsibly, with a large portion preserved for wildlife and structured land allocation for citizens.

If borders were removed overnight, countries that have built stability could face serious pressure from uncontrolled migration driven by conflict, poverty, and weak governance elsewhere. That could strain resources and threaten the peace we’ve worked hard to maintain.

Unity is important, but it must be built step by step, with equal development, strong systems, and mutual accountability.

Africa needs cooperation, not chaos.

Happy Good Friday!

As someone from Botswana who now lives in the UK, this is a concern for me. Botswana is known as a peaceful country that respects the law. Many Batswana travel to the UK for tourism, study, business, or to visit family.

I understand that the UK government wants to stop people who abuse the asylum system. But it is also important that genuine travellers from Botswana are not treated unfairly because of the actions of a few people.

Botswana and the UK have had a good relationship for many years. I hope both countries will continue to work together so that travel remains fair for people who follow the rules.

What do you think about this change?

🇧🇼🤝🇬🇧

Thousands have abused legal routes into the UK to claim asylum.

By introducing visit visas for tourists from Jordan, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago and Botswana, over 6,000 people were prevented from making claims.

Nicaraguans and Saint Lucians will now also require visit visas.

🌍 GLOBAL CONFLICTS DO NOT STAY IN ONE PLACE

Many people are asking: Why is Iran attacking countries other than Israel or the United States?

One reason is that some countries allow the United States to use military bases or facilities in their territory. When Iran targets those bases, the attacks can happen inside those countries.

This also raises an important question for Africa.

The United States has military partnerships in several African countries. The largest U.S. military base in Africa is Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti.

There has also been talk about a possible U.S. base in Botswana. Officially, both Botswana and the United States say there is no permanent American military base in Botswana. However, the Botswana Defence Force and the U.S. military do work together.

They sometimes train together during joint military exercises. For example, U.S. and Botswana soldiers have trained together at Thebephatshwa Air Base and in exercises like Southern Accord.

This brings an important question for Africans:

Should foreign military partnerships be part of Africa’s security?

Do they help protect African countries, or could they bring global conflicts closer to our continent?

As Africans, we should think carefully about our security, our sovereignty, and our future.

From next year, migrants wishing to stay in the UK permanently will need to speak and listen in English to an A-level equivalent standard.

It is right that those who wish to build a life here work hard, contribute and are able to play a full part in British life.

I’ve been reflecting on recent reports about African nationals being involved in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Rather than focusing on which country is involved, I think the deeper question is this: what social and economic conditions are leading some young Africans to seek opportunities in foreign conflicts?

There are people of African origin serving in many armed forces around the world, including in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. So the issue is broader than one nation or one headline.

For me, this is really about opportunity, youth development, and leadership at home. Africa’s future should be built on education, employment and stability, so that young people don’t feel their only option is to fight in wars far from home.

Just my reflections.

Yesterday, we shared our experience exploring the caves and dinosaurs at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, UK.

But there was another moment there that touched me in a completely different way.

As I walked through the grounds, I came across a thatched house display, an African village setting with sculpted domestic animals. It was part of the tourist and educational experience, but for me, it felt deeply personal.

Standing there, thousands of miles away from home, I suddenly felt a wave of nostalgia. The simplicity of the hut, the presence of livestock, the familiar village setting, it reminded me of my roots. Of childhood memories. Of culture. Of identity.

Living in the diaspora teaches you strength and resilience. But moments like this remind you that home never really leaves you, it lives quietly in your heart.

Africa is not just where I come from. It is who I am. 🇧🇼❤️

Today we visited the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, United Kingdom. I was struck by something powerful.

They didn’t just preserve caves. They built an experience around them. Dinosaurs. Education. Tourism. Revenue.

It’s a reminder that natural resources alone are not enough, presentation, creativity and vision turn history into income.

The real question is: are we fully leveraging our own natural heritage back home?

BOTSWANA stands at an important CONSTITUTIONAL moment.

On one hand, there is a company challenging the government in court after being denied a licence to operate an adult entertainment business. On the other hand, the country is debating the establishment of a Constitutional Court through a referendum.

These two developments are not separate. They are connected.

This case is not simply about strip clubs or morality. It is about constitutional boundaries.

If consenting adults choose to engage in a business, does the Constitution protect their liberty and economic freedom? Or does the State have the authority to restrict such activity in the name of public morality, cultural values, and social protection?

If Botswana establishes a Constitutional Court, that Court would become the final guardian of constitutional interpretation. It would not decide based on emotion or public opinion. It would ask:

• Does the government’s refusal limit a constitutional right?
• If so, is that limitation reasonable and justifiable in a democratic society?
• Is a blanket refusal proportionate, or should regulation be preferred over prohibition?

Constitutional courts in countries such as South Africa and Canada often apply a proportionality test, balancing individual liberty against legitimate state interests.

If Botswana’s Constitutional Court sees the light of day, cases like this could define how far individual freedom extends, how strongly morality can shape law, and how much discretion government authorities truly have.

This is not about promoting or opposing adult businesses.
It is about defining the character of our constitutional democracy.

Are we strengthening rights-based constitutionalism?
Or reaffirming Parliament’s authority to shape social policy?

The decision will echo far beyond this single case.

Botswana must think carefully.
