Michelin’s innovative ‘2-in-1’ EvoBib tyres are delivering impressive road and field performance for Bedfordshire-based LE Barnes & Sons, following more than a year of operation on a Fendt 728 equipped with VarioGrip central tyre inflation system (CTIS).

Operating across a diverse arable enterprise growing barley, wheat, peas and legume fallow, the agricultural contract farming business requires its machinery to perform efficiently in both field and transport applications.

Farm owner, Robert Barnes, says: “We run Michelins on everything and the EvoBibs have really impressed. When you pump the tyres up for road work, the performance is very good, which is important for us as our tractors are regularly moving from field to field. When fully inflated they just run on the central rib.

Develon has launched a new enhanced version of the company’s DX35Z-7 4 tonne Stage V compliant mini excavator.

The Develon DW01 18.4 kW (25 HP) diesel engine replaces the previous D17 engine in the upgraded DX35Z-7, providing better performance for heavy duty applications, with higher power and torque than engines in other machines of this size, giving hours of lower cost, efficient and effective operation. The zero tail swing design of the DX35Z-7 makes it ideal for work in confined spaces on construction, demolition, landscaping and utility projects.

Another change in the DX35Z-7 is in the position of the boom swing point, which has been moved 75 mm to the right, in combination with a change in the boom swing angle to 60o to both the left and right. This increases the operator’s visual range and visibility from the front of the cab which has been further optimised by a change in the position of the radio and an increase in the wiper blade angle from 60 to 89o.

Poor grass growth this summer is forcing many farmers to dip into grass silage stocks, and with maize clamps likely to be opened earlier than usual, effective consolidation, the use of an inoculant and meticulous feed out management will be key.

Lientjie Colahan, forage technical support at Lallemand Animal Nutrition, says: “Maize crops are looking strong across most of the country, but a rapid increase in plant dry matter due to drought stress leading to maize crops that are tougher to compact during ensiling are raising the risk of heating and spoilage in the clamp.”

Given these conditions, Mrs Colahan explains that using an inoculant may be particularly beneficial this year, protecting the nutritional value of the crop, and – if the right product is used – giving farmers the flexibility to open the clamp and bring maize into the ration sooner, while also improving aerobic stability once the clamp is opened.

CLAAS is introducing a new grain nutrient analysis system for its Lexion combine harvesters, designed to help UK farmers and contractors measure crop quality and yield potential in real time.

The NUTRIMETER GRAIN will be available from model year 2026 and uses transmissive near-infrared (NIR) sensor technology to assess grain ingredients during harvest. CLAAS says the system is the first transmissive NIR measurement system for combine harvesters, enabling online measurement of grain quality while combining is underway.

Unlike reflection-based systems, which analyse the surface of the sample, the transmissive method measures through the grain. CLAAS says this gives a more homogeneous and accurate assessment of key ingredients, including protein content in cereals, oil content in oilseeds and moisture content.

The system works via a bypass in the LEXION grain elevator, where a small flow of grain is continuously directed through an integrating ball and fully illuminated for analysis.

Pöttinger’s new TOP V 6520 C is a compact twin rotor rake without chassis that delivers impressive manoeuvrability and is ideal for farms with consistently high volumes of forage and complex logistics. Featuring an innovative pivoting headstock, the rake follows the tractor perfectly when cornering and rakes a central swath. The high centring force of the mechanical stabiliser struts on the pivoting headstock allows the machine to run smoothly without swaying from side to side. In addition, the machine is prevented from running forward when driving downhill.

The floating rotor suspension ensures three-dimensional ground tracking. The new MULTITAST jockey wheel is available as an option and is mounted directly on the headstock, allowing the rake to glide over any bumps in the ground. Equipped with these features, the rake works neatly to ensure a low crude ash content and high forage quality. The tandem axles compensate perfectly for uneven ground.

AgVantage UK has strengthened its position in the specialist root crop machinery sector after being appointed an authorised Scanstone dealer for Yorkshire.

The agreement sees the Beverley-based dealership supplying, servicing and supporting the full Scanstone product range, giving potato and vegetable growers across the county access to the Scottish manufacturer's soil preparation and harvesting equipment through a local sales and aftersales network.

The appointment further expands AgVantage's growing portfolio of specialist crop machinery brands, complementing its existing offering of equipment for cultivation, planting, harvesting and crop handling.

Following recent grants, slurry separation has become an investment priority for many livestock farms. However, the full benefits of separation are rarely considered or appreciated when installing separators, as Vogelsang’s Andy Hayhurst explains.

“Most now know that separators can reduce the amount of slurry being stored by up to 25 percent. This is an attractive goal for those reaching the top of their storage, but it is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to benefits of slurry separation,” he says.

He suggests that separating slurry helps improve its nutrient value, reduces crust formation, creates green bedding, helps with nutrient use efficiency and will reduce the strain on pumping and application equipment.

Amazone has introduced a model update for its ZG-TX combi spreader, adding an integrated weighing system and FlowControl automatic spread rate regulation for lime to improve application accuracy and ease of use.

The ZG-TX is designed for the precise spreading of mineral fertiliser and lime, with specification levels ranging from a straightforward lime spreader to a fully equipped combi machine. Amazone says the latest developments broaden its appeal for larger farms, contractors and machinery hire businesses that need one machine for a wide range of spreading materials.

The new weighing system provides accurate hopper fill level information and supports offline spread rate regulation for both lime and mineral fertiliser. Two robust weigh cells are positioned between the axle and frame, while an additional sensor in the drawbar records load data. The weight is shown on the ISOBUS terminal.

When used with optional work lights, the system also assists filling.

01/08/2026

Manually opening silage bales and climbing under the bale to remove wrap is known to be one of the riskiest tasks on-farm, particularly when working alone and handling up to a tonne of baled silage.

Michael Dollard, UK and Ireland sales and support manager at Tanco, says that by reducing the number of times operators need to leave the cab when moving or feeding out bales could drastically improve farm safety.

He says: “Farmers handle bales all the time, but it’s often when people are busy and rushing ahead to the next job that complacency creeps in, increasing the risk of serious injury.

“Once you’re out of the cab with livestock, slippery ground and machinery around you, the risk increases.”

Safer handling

Irish machinery manufacturer Tanco exports specialist machinery, including its i73 BaleShear.

Mr Dollard says the company’s bale shear was originally developed in response to a farmer in Kilkenny, Ireland, who wanted a safer and more efficient way to handle wrapped bales.
