The **Battle of the Hi**er Line**, also known as the **Battle of the Liri Valley**, was a significant World War II engagement that took place in **May 1944** during the Italian Campaign. It involved Allied forces attempting to break through a strong German defensive position in central Italy.

# # # Background:

* The **Hi**er Line** (later renamed the **Senger Line** by the Germans) was a fortified defensive line running across central Italy, built to slow the Allied advance after the fall of the **Gustav Line**, which included Monte Cassino.
* The line was named by the Allies after Adolf Hi**er, though the Germans referred to it as the **Senger-Riegel**, after General Fridolin von Senger und Etterlin.

# # # Location:

* The line extended from **Piedimonte San Germano** to the **Liri Valley**.
* Its main role was to protect the approaches to **Rome** following the Allied breakout from **Anzio** and the collapse of the Gustav Line.

# # # The Battle:

* Took place between **May 23–May 31, 1944**.
* Major Allied forces included:

* **Canadian I Corps**
* **British XIII Corps**
* **Polish II Corps**
* **Indian and French forces** played earlier roles in breaking the Gustav Line.

# # # Key Events:

* After fierce fighting at **Monte Cassino**, the Allies launched an assault on the Hi**er Line.
* The **1st Canadian Infantry Division** and the **5th Canadian Armoured Division** spearheaded the attack.
* The Germans had well-entrenched positions, including tank traps, machine gun nests, and minefields.
* After several days of intense fighting and heavy casualties, the Canadians breached the line near **Aquino** on **May 24, 1944**.

# # # Outcome:

* The breach forced the Germans to retreat further north toward Rome.
* The fall of the Hi**er Line allowed the Allies to advance toward the **Caesar Line**, the last major line of German defense before Rome.
* Rome was eventually liberated on **June 4, 1944**.

# # # Significance:

* The battle was a turning point in the Italian Campaign.
* It demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated infantry and armored assaults.
* It also highlighted the difficult terrain and strong German defensive tactics that characterized the campaign.

“Carrick FM” Carrick’s first radio station launched during the Waterfront Festival in June 1998, the station at that time called 'Radio Carrickfergus' operated from a caravan beside Carrickfergus Castle, broadcasting on 106.2FM, with the antenna placed on top of the Castle. The first on air presenter was also the station manager - Eddie West.

Christmas 2004 Carrickfergus was without its own local radio station, fearing that Carrickfergus would again be without its popular summer radio station to support the Waterfront festival, a radio committee was setup in the town with the support and advice of a number of traders in the area including Pat Clarke from Brypol Electrical and Isabel Kelly the DeCourcy centre manager. They approached a number of individuals and parties including other commercial stations in Northern Ireland and eventually a deal was struck with two commercial presenters with many years experience in running and operating RSL’s.

Carrickfergus Borough council, aware of the popularity of Carrick’s own radio station decided to give a grant to the newly formed radio committee to assist in the operation of the newly named “CARRICKFERGUS FM”

After being granted a licence from Ofcom during the summer Carrickfergus FM 107.2fm – complete with the new name, logo and a higher profile area in the Decourcy centre hit the air from 3rd to 20th June 2005. The station was an immediate success; on-air it had a mix of professional broadcasters and new talent from the local area. Local advertisers benefited enormously with competitive advertising packages – cheaper than ever before, and the listening public had the chance to win big prizes every day. Carrickfergus FM also teamed with Ulidia Integrated College to give the media studies class in the school the chance to create and produce their own radio station imaging.
