So how did I get on following my own advice? As cloud cover threatened to scupper the whole thing, we decided to drive out on the old road between Lauriston and Gatehouse. Every now and then the cloud did thin a bit and a burst of light would come through, but the phone wasn't able to catch anything.
Additionally, a swarm of flying ants decided a bright orange car was their new best friend. And when we tried driving further along the road, they all just clung onto the car until we stopped, then swarmed up again.
So we ended up staying in the car with the windows up. 🙄
I pulled out my camera. I had my 24-70mm lens on as I'd been hoping to take more of a landscape shot, but in the end everything was too dark when I exposed for the eclipse.
So I zoomed in as best as I could, and then I have cropped the hell out of the photos to be able to see the actual sliver of the sun. I do like the cloud patterns though 😎🌙📸

With a rare 90%+ solar eclipse happening, here in the UK, what's the best way to try photographing it with your camera or phone without frying your sensor, or your retinas?

In the 300th Episode Special of Understanding Photography with Kim Ayres - now on YouTube - https://youtu.be/K3A-_MJNqZ4 -the tables were turned and I was the one in the spotlight, being asked such questions as "What's my LEAST favourite thing to shoot?", "How long does it typically take to create one of my staged narrative shoots?" and "If I had enough money, would I give up the podcasts?"
If you're curious how I answered these, and many others, then click through!
