***EPISODE 006 - DARYL POWELL***

Born in Ackworth, Pontefract, in 1965, Daryl Powell's journey into the world of sports started with a love for football in an area of the country predominantly dominated by rugby. However, it was a move to Glasshoughton with his family around the age of 13 or 14 that brought him into contact with Rugby League.

Beginning as a junior player at Glasshoughton and later at Redhill ARLFC, Daryl signed his first professional contract with Sheffield at the age of 18. This marked the start of an illustrious career that took him across the globe, with playing stints in New Zealand, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Daryl also made notable appearances in Domestic Cup finals for Leeds Rhinos.

Transitioning to coaching, Daryl reached the pinnacle of the game, leading Castleford Tigers to two Wembley appearances. In 2017, his coaching prowess was evident as Castleford secured the League Leaders' Shield, although the Grand Final at Old Trafford that same year ended in disappointment. After a two-year tenure with Warrington Wolves that concluded in 2023, Daryl has now embraced the challenge of rebuilding the relegated Wakefield Trinity.

I’m really excited with some of the guests lined up to come on the show over the coming weeks but none more so than our very own Dezi Cogan.

This week Dezi joins me to speak about the journey he has been on, not just in the last 7 years after acknowledging that his toxic relationship with drink needed to change, but his subsequent recovery and sobriety.

Those that know Dezi know he tends to be quite an open book these days but as someone who genuinely cares about people and their problems, he wants a platform to be able to tell his story to a wider audience and to try and reach those people out there who are currently fighting their own demons and addictions and to offer help and guidance.
