On Armistice Day, we’re proud to share a story that connects past and present.

Recently, our team filmed the lifting and movement of a Mulberry Whale from the old Red Funnel jetty — a rare surviving section of the floating harbour system that made the D-Day landings possible.

Thanks to ABP Southampton - Port of Southampton, The Whale is now being restored, and we’ve been documenting its journey alongside those leading the recovery and preservation efforts.

As part of this work, we’re looking to connect with anyone who has a personal or family connection to the Mulberry Whales — whether through their design, construction, or use during WWII.

From our research, we understand that the original designer is sadly no longer with us, but we’d love to speak with any relatives or others who played a part in this remarkable story.

Today is Armistice Day — a moment to pause and remember.

We were honoured to be invited back to capture this year’s Service of Remembrance at the Gosport DDay Fellowship memorial, where the community gathered to pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

The atmosphere was deeply moving — surrounded by veterans, families, and local residents all united in reflection.

This photo was captured by us during the 2023 Remembrance Day service in Guildhall Square.

Even from the air, you could feel the silence — thousands of people standing together to honour those who served.

This year, it meant even more for us to be asked by Portsmouth City Council to live stream the 2025 wreath-laying ceremony to the big screen, helping everyone in the square share in that same moment of reflection.

It’s always humbling to see how our city remembers ❤️

Today marked something new for us at Solent Sky Services — and something truly special.

We were asked by Portsmouth City Council to live stream the Remembrance Day wreath-laying ceremony from the First World War Cenotaph and Second World War Memorial in Guildhall Square, broadcasting live to the big screen for the public to see.

Having previously filmed and attended this important event, it was an honour to be entrusted to deliver the live coverage this year.

Our team worked seamlessly behind the scenes — operating multiple cameras, managing live switching, and ensuring the ceremony was captured respectfully and beautifully.

We’re proud to have delivered this new service for our city, helping share a moment of remembrance with everyone gathered in the square and those passing through the heart of Portsmouth.

After three days of filming Valor in Portsmouth, it was quite something to watch her depart from her berth at Gunwharf Quays Marina and make her way out of the harbour. There’s something special about seeing a project through from every angle — you end up feeling genuinely connected to the subject 🙏🎬🚁

⚓️ Guiding giants through Portsmouth Harbour

Every large vessel that enters or leaves Portsmouth is accompanied by one of these hardworking pilot boats — a vital part of keeping our busy waters safe and moving.

Harbour pilots are expert mariners with detailed local knowledge of tides, depths, and navigation hazards. When a ship approaches, the pilot boat transfers the pilot aboard (often while both vessels are still moving!) so they can guide it safely through the narrow harbour entrance and to its berth.

From naval ships and ferries to cruise liners and cargo vessels — every journey through our harbour starts with the skill and precision of the Portsmouth pilot team ⛴

When Portsmouth serves up a crossover episode 👀

This morning we filmed Feadship superyacht Valor easing out of the harbour just as Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries hybrid flagship Victoria of Wight was heading in.

Two hybrids, completely different worlds — one built to roam the globe in luxury, the other keeping the Island connected every 45 minutes.

Seeing them side by side really puts Valor’s scale into perspective — a yacht so large it makes a cross-Solent ferry look almost modest! ⚓️

Only in the Solent do you get moments like this 💙
