Happy Sussex Day! 🖤

Sussex is our home county, and our passion for it - and nerdiness about its folklore - are plain to see!

Our first ever episode, which sounds pretty terrible, was all about the county’s history and folklore, including Eleanor’s telling of Cuthman of Steyning and The Devil.

During our fourth series we then returned to discuss the county in more depth, with a focus on West Sussex and Chichester, for our first ever Three Ravens Live Show recorded at Chichester Festival.

This one featured Martin’s comic retelling of Arundel The Horse (and his bumbling knight Sir Bevis of Hampton) and some lovely musical performances, too!

Next, we recorded a more Hastings-focused special Live @ Battle Folk and Fable Festival, where Martin told his take on the 1066 Norman Invasion, and we sang our original song “The Ballad of Billy The Conks.”

Most recently we appeared Live @ Ditchling Bookshop discussing East Sussex lore, and have also released a Rye Ghost Tour Special and a Lost Sussex Villages Special on Patreon!

Our Local Legends interview episode for Sussex, Dr Paul Quinn, is lucky number 13, and that chat is brilliant, so give it a listen if you haven’t already!

There are probably episodes we’ve forgotten to mention here, and we know - we haven’t yet done a deep-dive into Brighton’s folklore yet.

But news on that is coming soon…

Let's strip away the meat of mythology and render down the fat of folklore to cook up a delicious chat all about Ogres! 🖤

The word itself was coined by Chrétien de Troyes during the 12th century, and was used to talk about the brutish Britons on the other side of the channel - but from the Ancient Egyptian "Cannibal Hymn" of Pharaoh Unas to the Greeks and Romans with Polyphemus and Orcus, the name of these things is less important than what they do.

Personifications of wild, untameable nature and warnings about totalitarian power, what's at the root of this symbol of eating people?

Did it mean the same things to the Etruscans as it did to the first Italian chroniclers of folk romances?

What about when Charles Perrault re-adapted both 'The Ogre' and 'The Ogress' at the end of the 17th century, and started dressing them in fancy clothes?

From chthonic Gods of Oaths to Japanese Oni, Baba Yaga to the Ogre's position in contemporary psychotherapy, we're chopping it up, blending it down, then simmering the Ogre gently until it's ready.

Unless you're listening during the Reformation - in which case Ogres are just Catholics, and ought to be hunted down!

WHAT A WEEK!!! 🖤

We've travelled 500 miles in the last few days for Live Show dates at Leominster Festival and Great Dunmow BookFest, both of which were awesome fun, meanwhile our releases included:

✅ Magic and Medicines Episode 25: Familiars and Animal Magic

✅ Lang Fairy Tales Episode 51: The Golden Branch

✅ Lang Fairy Tales Episode 52: Dapplegrim and The Twelve Brothers

We really hope you enjoyed them, that you have a bone-crunching good time with tomorrow's episode about the history and folklore of Ogres, and THANK YOU SO MUCH to the hundreds of people we've met this week, who have ALL been kind and nice!

Time for a quiet Sunday evening though... We're tired!
