I have such good memories working on this film. Such a wonderful experience working with such incredible talent.

On this day, 18 February 2005 — exactly 21 years ago — the South African Xhosa-language film uCarmen eKhayelitsha made history by winning the Golden Bear award for best film at the 55th Berlin International Film Festival in Germany. Directed by Mark Dornford-May and set in the Cape Town township of Khayelitsha, the film adapted Georges Bizet’s classic opera Carmen, translating it into Xhosa and blending contemporary South African realities with classical music. It became the second South African film to compete at the prestigious festival and the first to claim the top prize, highlighting the global recognition of South Africa’s burgeoning film industry.

The win was hailed as a landmark moment for Xhosa-language cinema and African storytelling on the international stage, demonstrating how local narratives could resonate worldwide. Beyond its artistic success, the film showcased the talents of young South African performers, many of whom were cast directly from the streets of Khayelitsha.

Today, in 2026, uCarmen eKhayelitsha remains celebrated as a pioneering achievement in African cinema, inspiring filmmakers across the continent to blend traditional stories with modern expression while gaining international acclaim.

So pleased for the recognition of the incredible film. What a joy it was to be able to contribute.

The 19th South African Film and Television Awards honours the storytellers who shape our national narrative and uphold excellence across the industry. We are proud that Mother City Documentary has been nominated for two awards this year - Best Documentary Feature and Best Achievement in Directing.

At a moment when housing justice and the question of who our cities are for feels more urgent than ever, this recognition affirms the power of documentary to confront inequality, amplify community voices, and demand accountability. These nominations are not just an honour, they are a testament to storytelling that matters now.
