Have always rather hoped to be asked t write something for Slightly Foxed -- and this issue brings a wish come true

I’ve long admired Slightly Foxed — ‘the real readers quarterly’. I remember their kindness in allowing us to have a party in the basement of their offices in Hoxton Square to celebrate the republication of Jan Needle’s Wild Wood. It was a happy evening in exactly the right place, though we...

Here's a blog I wrote for Essex Book Festival. They have a theme of community this year. I'm not sure how well my female sailing individualists fit in to this but am looking forward to talking about them at Frinton Library on Wednesday June 11th. Stars to Steer By is published by Bloomsbury Nautical

By Julia Jones The focus for the Essex Book Festival 2025 is Community. The richness and diversity of Essex. Our extraordinary history and heritage, and the people who have shaped it and continue to shape our wonderful county. Our wonderful coastline and the many islands forming the Essex ‘Archipe...

Robert Simper has moved to Cornwall and his books have moved to Bittern Books of Norfolk. So if you're interested in his latest volume Shingle Beaches and Tidal Rivers that's where you need to look (or enquire from local booksellers)

This isn’t new news as he and Pearl moved away from Ramsholt in 2024 —- very sadly after a lifetime on the East Coast. Nevertheless, the rest of their family were relocating and many happy holidays had already been spent in the area. What’s more newsworthy, however, is Shingle Beaches and Tida...

We always look forward to the annual Felixstowe Book Festival at the end of June -- and this year is no exception. Francis will be interviewing writer Ben Chu and I'll be talking about my new book 'Stars to Steer By'. I'd like to thank the FBF organisers for putting up this blog to celebrate International Women's Day

Julia Jones’s new book Stars To Steer By celebrates women’s involvement with sailing and the sea in the 20th century. To celebrate International Women’s Day, Julia, a guest at this year’s fest

It's not enough that women should feel confident on the water. We need to be comfortable in any area of the sailing world, if that's where our interests and talents take us.

My somewhat formal obituary of Richard Woodman is published on line in the Guardian today. They wanted an appreciation of his writing, which I was glad to offer. There wasn't room for all the little things -- the advice he gave me when I was flinching at the responsibility of taking on Peter Duck; the fact-checking he did for the Salt-Stained book, the encouragement he gave to publish The Cruise of Naromis, the generous afterword he wrote for Maid Matelot, remembering his friend Rozelle Raynes. Above all it was the prompt email answers to questions and the interested, expert conversations that I shall really miss. I never gave those conversations enough time -- and now I never shall. Here's the obit anyway

End of year book round ups are a real pleasure especially when they remind one of pleasures from the beginning of the year, forgotten - or treats missed.
