Discover the Art & Legacy of Everest Pioneer Howard Somervell!🎨🥾

Selected for the 1922 Everest Expedition, Somervell captured the Himalayas, the Alps, and life on the mountain in incredible sketches and paintings as he carried his sketchbook everywhere. ⛰️

You can explore this collection, including the actual boots he wore on Everest, at the Heaton Cooper Studio in Grasmere, open until Sunday 23 November 2025. 🖼️

'First on Everest', is a long-overdue biography celebrating one of the early mountaineers took part in the first attempt to climb the mountain, and his oxygen-free height record in 1924 stood for over 50 years.🧗

Here, sits Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, with her sons, Albert, future husband of Queen Victoria, and Ernest, future duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.👩🧒👦

She lived a life full of heartbreak and controversy. She married at 16, but the union didn't last and when it collapsed, the court forced her into exile, barring her from returning to her sons. This was a scandal that reshaped her future, she spent her final years far from the world she once belonged to, and far from the children she loved.💍💔

Her story is moving, complicated, and often forgotten. Uncover the truth in 'Royal Outcast'📕: https://buff.ly/2hmCSfn

On this day in 1865, Victorian novelist and biographer Elizabeth Gaskell passed away. 🕯️

A quiet revolutionary, Gaskell challenged the norms of her time by writing about gender inequality, class struggle, and the realities of industrial life. While many of her contemporaries focused on the drawing rooms of the upper class, she set her stories in working-class Manchester, and her female characters were sharp, compassionate, and unafraid to speak their minds about politics.🚺🏭

Elizabeth Gaskell was a literary trailblazer and sadly died mid-sentence while writing 'Wives and Daughters' 160 years ago today. 📖💐
