🚨 Reminder for Family & Friends 🚨

Please keep an eye out for scams that often target older adults. Scammers can be very convincing — they may call, text, or email pretending to be a loved one, a government agency, or even a trusted company.

Recently there has been scams such as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment Scam’ involving fake texts or emails falsely claiming to be from Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), to trick people into giving personal or financial details urgently by prompting a fake date, often the date of the message sent.

👉 Red flags to watch for:
- Pressure to act immediately
- Requests for payment
- Unfamiliar phone numbers or email addresses
- Messages that create panic (“You owe money” / “Your account is locked” / “I’m in trouble, send money”)

✅ What to do:
- Pause and verify before responding.
- Hang up and call the person or company directly using a known number.
- Talk to family before sending money or sharing personal info

A good habit is to get those people to check in with you via a known / trusted source and you can help them verify if it is real or a scam.

Let’s help protect our loved ones by reminding them: If something feels off, it probably is.

📱 Back to School, staying safe online.

📍 Turn off location tagging.
- Don’t tag your home or school in photos.
- Make sure your phone’s location services are off for camera and social media apps, making sure they don’t automatically tag when posting or sharing images.

💭 Think before you tag:
- Ask permission before tagging others, not everyone wants to be in public posts.
- Don’t include people in photos who haven’t agreed to be online.

Government Cracks Down on Ransomware Payments

The UK government is moving to ban ransom payments across public sector and critical infrastructure, while requiring all businesses to notify authorities before paying.

This marks a major shift, aiming to cut off the financial incentive fuelling ransomware attacks.

This raises the bar for preparedness: robust incident response, clean backups, and rapid detection are no longer optional, they’re essential.

Takeaway: Treat ransomware like a crisis event, build a coordinated response plan across tech, legal, and comms now, before you're in the middle of one.

Do you need help planning for a potential threat? Let us help you and your business stay self

Social Engineering Strike on Third Party Vendor (Insurance Sector)

Although the Allianz Life breach affected its U.S. operations via a compromised third party CRM, it sends a powerful global message: vendor access remains a prime target.
This reflects a wider trend of social engineering attacks exploiting supply chain weaknesses across sectors.

Takeaway: Your security doesn't stop at your firewall. Regularly review vendor access, run phishing simulations, and include vendor breach scenarios in your incident response exercises.

💜 The Power of People 💜

At Digital Safety, we know that our greatest strength lies in our people.
Last week, we took time away from our screens to come together — playing video games, sharing stories, and even enjoying a BBQ in the rain (because nothing stops us up North! 🌧️🔥🎮).

It was a chance to celebrate the energy, ideas, and friendships that make our work possible. Moments like these remind us that behind every project, every event, and every solution: it’s people who drive change.

Here’s to our brilliant team, our supporters, and everyone who makes Digital Safety what it is. Together, we’re not just building safer digital spaces - we’re building a community.

🛡️ If it feels wrong, weird or secret – tell a parent or trusted adult, teacher or guardian.
🛡️ Reinforce they won’t get in trouble for speaking up, even if they accidentally clicked something or responded.
