Sweeping tale of a fierce, passionate and infamous woman fighting to assert her destiny.

Lady Macbethad by Isabelle Schuler is set before the events of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The novel explores the early life of Lady Macbeth or Gruoch as she is also known, particularly her childhood and formative years, offering a backstory that helps to explain the motivations and experiences that shaped her character. Schuler's portrayal provides a deeper understanding of the historical and psychological context behind Lady Macbeth's later actions portrayed in Shakespeare's play, focusing on the events that lead her to marry Macbeth and the challenges she faces before the famous tragedy unfolds. This prequel approach offers readers a new perspective on a well-known character, expanding the narrative beyond the confines of the Shakespearean drama.

Schuler’s portrayal is empathetic, humanizing a character often seen as ruthless and manipulative. The novel takes readers back to medieval Scotland, blending historical
accuracy with compelling storytelling. Schuler’s lush, descriptive writing vividly captures the violent, turbulent atmosphere of the time.

The novel explores themes of power, guilt, and the burdens of fate, inviting readers to question the line between ambition and moral corruption, and the consequences of unchecked power.

BOOK REVIEW - This is a review of the audiobook of "Instruments of Darkness" by John Connolly is the 21st instalment in the Charlie Parker series, and it is a testament to Connolly's mastery of the thriller genre. The novel is set to be released on May 7, 2024, and it is fast paced with short chapters. The narrator is American and at first sounds like the old like a 50's private eye type show, however you quickly understand the timeline is current. The narration is
excellent and perfectly delivers this dark tale peppered with wry humour.

The story unfolds in Maine, where Colleen Clark is accused of a heinous crime against her own child. The case has polarized the community, with most people convinced of her guilt. However, Charlie Parker, alongside lawyer Moxie Castin, senses there's more to the story. They delve into a world that intertwines the ordinary with the supernatural, as they encounter a group of fascists preparing for conflict, a disgraced psychic seeking atonement, and a sinister house in the depths of the Maine woods—a house that harbours something far more malevolent
Connolly's narrative is gripping, seamlessly blending mystery, horror, and crime with elements of the supernatural. His ability to create a chilling atmosphere is unparalleled,
and "Instruments of Darkness" is no exception. The novel's pacing is impeccable, with each chapter drawing the reader deeper into the dark heart of the story.
The Charlie Parker series has been lauded for its complex characters and intricate plots,
and this latest entry appears to continue that tradition. Connolly's skillful storytelling is on
full display, as he weaves a tale that is both thrilling and thought-provoking. The book is also accessible to new readers, as it can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, though it will undoubtedly entice them to explore the previous books in the series.

Just because they say it doesn’t mean it’s true.  In this retelling,  Hera, the vengeful stepmother and jealous wife has been given depth to her character and Jennifer Sant has given the reader the opportunity to see Hera’s point of view.

The narrative unfolds with an exploration of Hera's formative years and her pivotal contribution to Zeus's successful revolt against their despotic father, Cronos. As they ascend to power on Mount Olympus, Hera's aspirations to co-rule with Zeus are swiftly eclipsed by his betrayals and despotic behaviour, reflecting the oppressive nature of the ruler they overthrew. This conflict ignites Hera's personal battle and underscores the book's main motif: the pursuit of authority and the consequent sacrifices.

Jennifer Saint presents Hera in a complex light; she is simultaneously wrathful and merciful, a sovereign with immense power and a spurned woman. The story probes deep into Hera's mind, shedding light on her drives and the rationale behind her actions, which are often misinterpreted. Saint embraces the more sombre facets of Hera's persona, using them to underscore her fortitude and tenacity.

Saint's prose is poetic and captivating, drawing readers into the vivid realm of Greek mythology. Her profound understanding of the lore is apparent, yet she conveys it in a manner that is both approachable and intriguing. The book transcends a mere recounting of tales; it scrutinizes ancient legends through contemporary eyes, challenging traditional gender roles and the essence of dominion.

In essence, "Hera" is an intellectually stimulating and perceptive work that presents a novel viewpoint on a time-honoured narrative. It stands as a tribute to Saint's narrative prowess and her knack for infusing age-old stories with newfound vitality. Boasting intricate characters and substantial thematic depth, "Hera" promises to leave a lasting impression on its audience.

A Sign of Her Own” is a novel by Sarah Marsh. It tells the story of Ellen Lark, a deaf woman who was once a student of Alexander Graham Bell. Bell taught her how to speak using his technique called Visible Speech, and confided in her about his dream of producing a device which would transmit the human voice along a wire: the telephone. However, Ellen believes that Bell betrayed her and other deaf pupils in pursuit of ambition and personal gain, and cut Ellen off from a community in which she had come to feel truly at home. The novel explores themes of deaf identity, betrayal, and the hidden history of the deaf community in the invention of the telephone.
