Event: Simon Mayor & Hilary James
Saturday 27 June
Hill Memorial Hall

The Chesterfield Canal Trust is promoting two concerts at the newly restored Barrow Hill Memorial Hall. The proceeds will go towards the further restoration of the canal.

Across Britain from Shetland to Sark, and across the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, Simon Mayor and Hilary James have brought their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

If they have a speciality, it’s an ability to combine a truly diverse array of talents into a hugely entertaining stage show. There can’t be many performers who slide easily from a beautifully evocative Irish ballad into a mandolin and guitar version of Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and then have the audience singing one of their own notorious comic songs, but it’s this wry humour and an easy, informal stage manner that holds it all together.

In 2022 Simon and Hilary were delighted to accept invitations to be honorary directors of The Classical Mandolin Society of America.

They share a passionate interest in children’s music and have worked extensively with young people in theatres and schools, as well as writing and presenting music education programmes for BBC Radio and TV for six years. They have recorded five ‘Musical Mystery Tour’ children’s albums of original songs, ‘Lullabies with Mandolins’ (currently riding high on Apple Music), two rhyming picture story books for Top That!

Publications, and the ‘Musical Mystery Tour’ songbook, published by Faber Music.

To book, search for Chesterfield Canal Trust and follow the links or ring 01246 477569. Tickets cost £15. The concerts start at 7:30pm, and the bar will be open.

Event: The Swing Commanders
Friday 26 June
Hill Memorial Hall

The Chesterfield Canal Trust is promoting two concerts at the newly restored Barrow Hill Memorial Hall. The proceeds will go towards the further restoration of the canal.

The Swing Commanders are a stunningly vibrant and versatile group that performs an exciting mix of 1940s classics, boogie-woogie, western swing, 50s jump jazz and more!

Every member sings and plays at least one instrument, sometimes three; yet what makes them stand out even above their incredible music ability and performing skills is their joie-de-vivre.

The band has appeared, often headlining, at most of the UK’s top Vintage and Country Music festivals. Loved by fans of Jazz, Country, Swing and Blues, The Swing Commanders fill dancehalls with Lindy Hoppers, Modern Jivers, Line Dancers, and Social Dancers, up and down the UK, and as far as Europe and the US.
People who experience the band for the first time are amazed at the energetic showmanship, the instrument swapping, the tight arrangements, and vocal blend.

To book, search for Chesterfield Canal Trust and follow the links or ring 01246 477569. Tickets cost £15. The concerts start at 7:30pm, and the bar will be open.

EVENT: Apprenticeship and Technical Education Information
Wednesday 4 March 2026
Chesterfield FC

Young people and their and parents and carers are invited to come along to an event to learn more about apprenticeships and the options available to them locally.

Everyone is welcome to come along to the Apprenticeship and Technical Education Information Event, organised by Chesterfield Borough Council in partnership with East Midlands Combined County Authority Careers Hub, on 4 March from 6pm at Chesterfield Football Club.

More than 400 people have attended these events in the last two academic years, to find out more about further learning or career opportunities in Chesterfield and surrounding areas.
The event at the football club will focus on Construction, Manufacturing, Engineering, Health and Social Care.

There will also be a question-and-answer panel and the opportunity to speak with Young Apprentice ambassadors to gain a full understanding of different opportunities within these sectors once completing formal education.

There will also be live apprenticeship vacancies that can be discussed directly with employers at the event too.

No booking is needed, but this is a popular event so please arrive promptly at 6pm.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and vice chair of the Skills and Employment Partnership, said: “I encourage as many young people and their families as possible to come along to this event to find out more about opportunities in Chesterfield and surrounding areas. We have had great feedback from those who have attended the previous events about how the information they found out helps them to make informed decisions about their future career paths.

“The sessions are organised in partnership with East Midlands Combined County Authority Careers Hub and local businesses to ensure that all of the topics covered in the event are relevant to attendees and over-time can help businesses to grow by employing young people in their organisations.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “Apprenticeships play a vital role in opening doors for young people and giving them the skills they need to build rewarding careers. Too many young people feel like they need to choose between earning and learning: apprenticeships mean they can have both.

“The EMCCA Careers Hub supports events with local partners like Chesterfield Borough Council because they are a chance to show the breadth of choice in the local area. They bring together young people, families, employers, and educators in one place: connecting local young people to inspiration and opportunity.

“In this way, the EMCCA Careers Hub serves both the young people and employers of the region: creating clear pathways into good jobs while also supporting employers to develop the skilled workforce they need to grow.”

Employers attending the event at Chesterfield Football Club include Chesterfield Royal Hospital, NT Killingly, MSE Hiller and United Cast Bar, plus Chesterfield College, Nottingham Trent University and The University of Derby will be attending as educational providers.

Event: Celebrating International Women’s Day
Monday 9 March 9:30am to 1pm
Chesterfield Football Club

Local people are invited to mark International Women’s Day by attending a free event themed around ‘women in sport’ at Chesterfield’s football Club.

The Chesterfield Equality and Diversity Forum and Chesterfield FC Community Trust are hosting an event including a series of inspirational speakers to mark the occasion on Monday 9 March from 9.30am to 1pm at SMH Group Stadium, home to Chesterfield Football Club.

Each of those presenting during the event are ‘breaking barriers’ in sport and inspiring the next generation.

Speakers at the event include the Head of Community at Chesterfield FC Community Trust who uses football to build inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive and an assistant referee who made history as part of the first all-female team at Soccer Aid and officiated the 2023 Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley.

A former women’s England international footballer with a career spanning Everton and Doncaster Belles, a representative from women’s rugby who co-founded Ashbourne Women and is Head of Girls Rugby for Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire Rugby Football Union and an avid footballer and former engineer, who transitioned into the sports sector to drive social change complete the line-up of speakers.

Councillor Judy Staton, cabinet member for governance said: “International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate leadership, strength and the contributions women continue to make, in this case to sport, around the country, as well as in our local communities.

“I encourage people to come along to hear about how our speakers have shaped women’s sport, how they have pushed for change and helped to inspire others. It is important to reflect on challenges in this area and continue to strive for both equality and opportunities in all areas of work.”

During the event, attendees can see a moving collection created by women in expressive art sessions run by WORTH (Women On the Road to Healing). These chairs serve as powerful vessels for stories of trauma and resilience, breaking the silence surrounding abuse.

After the speakers conclude, those attending will be offered a guided tour of the stadium’s premier facilities.

This event is open to all and free of charge, but places are limited. Book your place via:

15/12/2025

Sustainable doorstep Christmas tree collections to raise funds for Ashgate Hospice Residents across North Derbyshire can have their Christmas trees collected straight from their doorstep this New Year, thanks to an eco-friendly fundraising scheme supporting Ashgate Hospice.

The service, supported by Jake Eville Tree Care, offers a simple and sustainable way for the community to recycle real Christmas trees in return for a suggested donation of £15 per tree.

Collections will take place from Wednesday 7 January to Friday 9 January 2026, with residents asked to leave their tree outside their property by 8am on Wednesday 7 January.

The service will operate across Chesterfield, Dronfield, South Normanton, Brimington, Clowne, Clay Cross, Eckington, Killamarsh, Bolsover, Bakewell, Alfreton, Matlock and surrounding areas, covering postcode areas S18, S21, S40, S41, S42, S43, S44, S45, DE4, DE45 and DE55.

Once collected, the trees will be placed in a chipper and recycled to create sustainable energy.

James Branson, Events and Community Fundraising Manager at Ashgate Hospice, said: "We’re thrilled to bring Treecycle back in 2026, giving people a simple, sustainable way to recycle their Christmas trees while supporting vital hospice care.

“For a suggested donation of £15, our team of dedicated staff and volunteers will collect your tree from your doorstep - all you need to do is leave it outside.

“Recycling your tree not only helps create sustainable energy, but every pound raised goes directly towards ensuring we can continue providing specialist care to patients and the people important to them."

Once collected, each tree is chipped and recycled to create sustainable energy. When a full van load is ready, the wood chippings are dried on a specialised floor, reducing moisture and creating efficient biomass fuel. This fuel then heats agricultural buildings, including barns, stables, and a greenhouse that grows produce year-round.

The previous Treecycle appeal saw 1,118 trees collected, raising more than £23,500 for hospice care.

Bookings for collections can be made online. Alternatively, residents can contact the hospice team on 01246 567 250.
