Hill I’ll die on: going darker isn’t just about “adding some lowlights.”

After nearly 30 years in the industry, I’ve created my fair share of disasters 😂 but I’d like to think I’ve learnt even more from them.

And one of the biggest things I’ve learnt is that when you’re taking blonde hair darker, the real skill is understanding:

what’s missing, what needs replacing, how much depth you actually want to create, and where that colour needs to sit.

Whether you’re lowlighting, glazing, toning or colouring, you’re still using colour.

The difference is in the intention behind the formula and the placement.

Because if you don’t understand the canvas underneath, you can make something look muddy, hollow, too warm, too cool or just completely flat very quickly.

That’s the bit I love teaching.

Not just what to put on the hair , but why.

Okay, sorry to do this to you guys, but I’m really busy in the salon today 😂

So instead of disappearing, I thought I’d bring you along with me.

Today I’m going to show you a little bit about beige blondes — what I’m looking for in the hair, what makes a beige actually look expensive rather than muddy, and how I think about creating the formula.

I’ve been teaching hairdressers colour theory and techniques for the last 15 years, so I’m going to break it down really simply as I go.

And no you don’t have to niche down or be a grey blending specialist , you can be whatever and whoever you want to be and you can work all the hours and serve everyone or you can know that NO ! Is a complete sentence

From what I learned this weekend, and from someone close to me - I’m embarrassing making embarrassing videos for hairdressers who want to learn !

Because when you put yourself online, not everybody is going to like you.

Some people will cringe.
Some people will talk.
Some people will think you’re embarrassing.

That’s part of being visible! Thats showing up and being the most authentic version of yourself and I know so many hide behind a screen because it’s scary tapping into your calling .

But this is for the hairdresser who DOES want to be seen.

I don’t just post pictures of the back of people’s heads or show up with all the best parts of my life ! Because that’s not always real .

I post my face.
My voice.
My opinions.
My teaching.
Me.

And at first, that is fu***ng embarrassing.

But then you realise you’re not posting for the people laughing.

You’re posting for people like Natalie

Natalie had been in the industry for years, but she hadn’t been taught in a way that gave her the confidence and understanding she needed.

She found me, started learning with me and honestly…

look at her work now.

She is fu***ng amazing.

The glow-up was unreal.

And THAT is why I make the embarrassing videos.

Because if being visible helps one hairdresser stop hiding, understand her craft properly, take herself seriously and build a career she actually loves…

that matters more to me than being laughed at.

So if there’s a part of you that wants to show up too…

post the video.

Say the thing.

Let people cringe.

Not everybody has to like you, you’re not here to people please ! That’s a prison in itself .

It takes strength and courage to post the good the bad and the ugly !

You’re here for the people who need you.

And I want to see female hairdressers succeed and run a business that brings them prosperity and happiness

If you’re still using the same T-section, same diagonal back, same face frame on nearly every blonde client… it’s no wonder you’re struggling to create a completely different finish.

Because balayage isn’t really about knowing how to put a foil in.

It’s knowing where to place the light, where to leave the depth and how that placement changes what the eye sees.

You don’t need another toner formula saved on Instagram.

You need to know WHY the formula you’ve chosen is going to work on the canvas sitting in front of you.

Because when that toner isn’t shifting after 10 minutes…
and your client’s looking up at you asking, “How’s it looking?” 😅

That’s when knowing your underlying pigment changes everything.

Instead of thinking…

Was it yellow?
Was it orange?
Do I need violet?
Do I need blue?
Should I just mix something stronger and hope? 👀

You can actually read the hair.

You know the level.
You know the contributing pigment sitting underneath.
You know what needs neutralising.
And THEN you formulate.

No random remixing.
No disappearing into the staff room to ask someone else.
No standing at the backwash praying it’s done something.

That’s exactly why I created my Underlying Pigment Chart — the chart I wish I’d had beside me years ago when I was still trying to make sense of what I was actually seeing.

Because certainty behind the chair doesn’t come from memorising more formulas.

It comes from understanding the canvas.

There isn’t ONE right way to formulate hair colour.

And I actually think that’s where so much of the confusion comes from.

Ask five colourists what they’d mix and you could get five completely different answers — and potentially five beautiful results.

The goal isn’t to memorise my formula.
Or her formula.
Or the one you saved from Instagram three months ago.

The goal is to have a framework you trust.

So when a client sits in your chair, you know:

What am I actually looking at?
What level am I working from?
What underlying pigment is sitting in that canvas?
Where am I trying to take it?
And what does my formula need to do to get me there?

Because once you can read the hair, formulation stops feeling like a guessing game.

You can change brands.
You can change shades.
You can create different formulas.

But your way of thinking stays consistent.

That’s the freedom.

Not having one magic formula for every head of hair — but knowing how to work one out for yourself.

Maybe you don’t want to quit hairdressing.

Maybe you want to quit the version of hairdressing where you’re cramming your diary, rushing colour decisions and then giving your profit back in free re-dos.

Because being busier doesn’t automatically make you more profitable.

Not if you’re:
→ second-guessing at the colour bar
→ over-toning because you’re rushing
→ squeezing in “just one more” client
→ then fixing the result on your own time

The goal isn’t to become the hairdresser who can cope with more.
