RACE REPORT: Scottish National 50 Mile Time Trial Championships 2025

TLDR: It was going well until it wasn't!

OFFICIAL TIME: 2:07:03
POSITION: 12th place overall (5th in Senior category)

Felt good on the outward leg and caught a fair few riders before the turn at 40km. Then powered back north using the tailwind to help up the hills as best I could.

All was going smoothly until I turned off the A90 onto the final hilly headwindy section, both knees started cramping up so had to ease off and just couldn't keep any momentum. Was a shame as i was probably on for around 2hr pace before that but there was nothing I could do except just suffer through top the line. Having to getup at 2:30am with less than 3 hours sleep is the most likely the main culprit as nutrition/hydration was on point ! (bloody insomnia!)

Anyway, Still a good race and glad I took part.

Now I need some proper sleep! :p

UPDATE: The Scottish National 50 Mile TT Championship is ON! This coming Sunday. Near Stonehaven (South of Aberdeen).

After the disappointment of the race being cancelled last minute earlier in the year (thanks roadwork), the race is back on and I'm almost ready. The extra month or so of racing/training has probably been for the better as I'm probably in better shape than I've been for a while.

The course is 80+km of Scottish A roads which should play to my strengths (Consistent power and shear perseverance :P ) it being mostly flat with a few rollers.

Overall, my goal is to get as near to 2 hours as possible if the legs cooperate. I did manage a just over 1hr time (by 59 seconds) in a 25-mile TT a couple of weeks ago and actually got my first (and probably only) WIN of the season in the local Club 10 mile TT last week. Now getting the bike dialled in with some fresh rubber and nutrition strategy sorted so hopefully a near 2hr time should be doable if everything comes together on the day.

Not looking forward to the 2:30am wake-up call for the 2.5-hour drive to the race HQ... It's going to be a long day before I even clip in!

Will update with how it all goes post race.

Any support would be much appreciated! :)

RACE UPDATE: unfortunately I received a message at just before 5:30pm yesterday informing me that the Scottish national 50 mile time trial were to be cancelled. The reason given was additional roadworks on the course. This is obviously not how I wanted this weekend to go and I'm obviously extremely frustrated considering the amount of effort/training it's taken to get me back to this point despite everything that's happened over the past few months.

Regardless thank you to all those who sent their messages of good luck and best wishes. it really did mean a lot.

I'm just bitterly disappointed and don't really know what to do now...

UPDATE!! RACE CANCELLED DUE TO ROAD WORKS... ๐Ÿ˜ก

Well... after a truly chaotic few months and some big life changes (those who saw my last update will know what I mean), I somehow find myself racing back at a National level.

This Sunday I'll be lining up for the Scottish National 50-Mile TT Championships near Stonehaven (South of Aberdeen). 80+km of Scottish dual carriageway, which should suit me better than some of the lumpier stuff I've been getting used to /riding racing up here. Done a few TTs in the past month or so but this is the BIG one!

Aiming to get somewhere around (hopefully just under) the 2-hour mark if things go to plan although I'm definitely not as fit as I was this time last year so who knows.

Just making all the final preparations and pre race gear checks. Main priority now is to rest up and hopefully get a good night's sleep tonight and mentally prep for the race on sunday. Not much looking forward to the 2:30am alarm on the morning of the race... That 2 and a half hour drive through mountains is going to be... interesting.

Anyway, wish me luck - will report back with how it goes.

(Here are a few pics from a couple of races i've done in the last month or so)

Well, 2024 was certainly a year of ups and downs in terms of my racing season/on bike performance.

It started off well on the local TT circuits as well as going round and round at Portsmouth velodrome. In just my second race of the season, I managed to come in 3rd place (CTT CLASSIC SERIES first round) on a particularly lumpy 14.6 mile sporting TT course. But... unfortunately, due to some prolonged bouts of illness and chronic fatigue right in the middle of the season, I wasn't really able to compete as much as I would have liked to. This scuppered my campaign to retain both my 2nd category BC licence and defend my Club 25 mile TT Championship Trophy (having won it in both 2022 & 2023).

However, I still managed to compete in 36 races (25 TTs and 11 crits!), finishing all but ONE (bloody puncture :P). Ended up with 9 wins and 17 podium finishes, mostly at local and regional level TTs, making it into the top 10 in 26 races - not bad for a 90kg rider on a road bike with clip-ons and a DIY 'aero' disc wheel ๐Ÿ˜…. Also competed in my first 50 mile TT (finishing in a time of 1hr 54mins & 32secs) and at two National level events - finishing 20th in Senior TT category at the National 50 Mile TT Championships and 37th in Senior TT category at the National Closed Circuit TT Championships respectively.

Due to circumstances outside of my control, this may well be my last season in which I am able to race properly for a while. Cheers to everyone who helps put on the races, to the marshals, timekeepers and indeed to all of my fellow competitors. It's been fun while it lasted :)

RACE REPORT: NFCC BOXING DAY TT (P311)
Official time: 23:28
Position: 5th

Did better than I expected and wasn't too far off 4th! Conditions were calm but very moist/damp with a proper mix of drizzle and mist making everything pretty grim. My visor fogged up almost immediately which was fun ๐Ÿ™„

Roads were pretty slick in places, particularly around the one-way system at the turnaround - had to take that bit more carefully so probs lost a few seconds there!

Managed to pace my effort pretty much bang on, averaging 348W, so I still felt good all the way to the line. Ended up averaging 41.2 km/h (25.6mph) which wasn't too shabby for a Boxing Day morning! About a minute off my course PB but still pretty happy with that considering my current fitness level.

Could have probably eked out a few more seconds here and there but happy with that :)

(did totally bonk on my way home though :P - nothing like a 30km post-TT crawl home!)

RACE REPORT: RTTC NATIONAL 50 MILE TT CHAMPIONSHIP

DISTANCE: 50 MILES / 80KM (give or take)
OFFICIAL TIME: 01:59:09
POSITION: 20th Senior TT (48th Overall)

TLDR: VERY SOGGY & Too lumpy for me ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Well that was unpleasant but fun to be competing with the big boys :)

It was a dry start and I probably went out too hard and really felt quite i'll early on up to the first turnaround point. However, once I got myself through that I got my head back in the game it was just a matter of turning pedals and dragging in any slower riders in front. Managed to catch my minute man just as the rain (which wasn't forecasted...) started to chuck it down just before the far turnaround point. This caused my visor to completely fog up so I couldn't see properly for the majority of the later half.

Myself and my minute man had a bit of a ding dong/yo-yoing battle for the rest of the race (although they mostly hung behind me) but in general he was faster on the hills and I was faster on the flat. They eventually did get away slightly into the final roundabout'y section before the finish, mainly due to traffic but I still managed to beat his time in the end! I almost slid into the side of a bus and then very nearly got taken out by an impatient van on the last few roundabouts.

Apart from those near incidents, I did have to basically stop for traffic on a few other occasions (again, at roundabouts) but I'm still happy with my race and was just happy to compete and complete my first NATIONAL TT!

My informal target was to aim for a sub 2hr and/or 25mph average speed so I'm glad to have managed to achieve both of those even on my adapted road bike, in those conditions and despite my recent ill health, lack of sleep etc.

Unfortunately, due to my chronic insomnia (which is really bad currently) it's going to be a rough recovery but I'm glad I took part :)

RACE REPORT: A3crg 'Nifty Fifty' TT

TLDR: 2hrs sleep + pinned up skinsuit = not a fun time...

Official Time: 01:54:32
Category Position: 6th
Overall: 24th

Despite the 4am start in order to get to the race, I'm happy to still do a sub 1hr 55 despite the last min panic as a result of the broken zip and subsequent lack of proper warm up but that wasn't pleasant :p Lost loads of time on the hills and almost got tagged by a dead badger that got hit by a passing car and flung into my path! Also, almost took the wrong junction on the first lap due to a turned around sign. Still, I had about minutes gap on the next rider so not bad for my first 50 mile tt. It think not having a full TT bike definitely costs you a hell of a lot of time over these longer distances.
