Art is a global phenomenon. But how do we encounter it? What does it do? And what can it tell us about ourselves?

These are some of the questions that Dana Arnold explores in her expanded edition of 'A Short Book About Art'.

Drawing parallels across different time periods and cultures, from the cavemen to Picasso, Gainsborough to Hockney and Turner to Hokusai, this book is a lively illustrated journey through art history – perfect for anyone wanting to learn more across a stunning breadth of art.

🎺 EDWARD BURRA 🎺

Renowned for his extraordinarily imaginative works — from satirical depictions of the urban underworld in France and vibrant jazz clubs of New York during the Harlem Renaissance, to landscapes showing the rise of industry in post-war Britain — Edward Burra uniquely blended first-hand experiences and memories with a rich tapestry of visual references, drawn from newspapers, literature, art history, music and cinema.

This major monograph — published to accompany the first Tate exhibition of Burra's works since the artist's lifetime — offers a close look at over eighty works, some of which will be presented for the first time from the Tate archives. It reveals the life of an unconventional artist who experienced first-hand many of the most turbulent and catastrophic events of the twentieth century, including the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War, and reflected them in his increasingly surrealist work.

Featuring contributions from Thomas Kennedy, Eliza Spindel, Rosemary Shirley, Andrew Stephenson, and Catherine Tackley.

✨ ITHELL COLQUHOUN: BETWEEN WORLDS is now open at Tate St Ives, coming soon to Tate Britain! ✨

🌀 A landmark publication on an artist whose life has largely been shrouded in mystery, this dazzling volume reveals a daring visionary who charted her own course between two worlds: that of modern art and the realms of myth and magic.

🌀 Ithell Colquhoun (1906–1988) was one of the most ground-breaking artists of her generation. Colquhoun investigated surrealist methods of unconscious picture-making and fearlessly delving into the realms of myth and magic, exploring the possibilities of a divine feminine power as a path to personal fulfilment and societal transformation.
