When it comes to opportunities in general, Laos is not the most favourable environment. Compared to Thailand, we are far behind in many areas, including accessibility, logistics, product variety, and digital opportunities on platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Thailand is on the list of eligible countries that can monetize content across various social media platforms, while Laos has almost none of these options. The only major platform available for monetization here is YouTube, yet creators in Laos still have to pay a 30% tax to the US government, whereas creators in Thailand pay only 15%.

Back when I ran my business, even basic materials such as quality zippers and tailoring supplies required a trip to Bangkok because they were not readily available in Laos. Despite having neighbouring countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and China—each with strong systems and infrastructure—we have been slow to learn from or adopt their models to improve our own.

This is the downside of hiring a contractor to build a house in Laos. It can get very slow.

The two-day slow boat from Houayxay to Luang Prabang, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng, is one of the most popular ways to enter Laos from Thailand—aside from flying, taking the train, or riding the bus.

The journey is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. (Lao time), but our boat departed at 10:30 a.m. The first day from Houayxay to Pakbeng took about 8 hours. The second day, from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang, took around 9 hours due to several stops along the way.

This route isn’t for everyone because of its slow pace, but the scenery along the Mekong River is truly beautiful. The fare is 400,000 kip (around $20), and you can buy your ticket at the ticket office by the pier in Houayxay.

Please note that only cash is accepted.
And better pay in Lao Kip, Thai Baht is accepted but the rate is pretty bad. Do make sure to change your money at one of the grocery stores near by the pier. They will give you lower rate of 650 per 1 Baht but still much better than paying in Thai Baht.
