TONY HURST GALLERY: 8 inch 203mm f/4 Cooke Telepanchro Lens, words by Gray Levett

“Perhaps the somewhat esoteric story of this lens rightfully belongs to historians, but if so, it might well have remained back-shelved in the photographic memory of those who were involved in its production.
This issue’s article describes, rather unusually, a non-Nikon product. My reason for bringing it to your attention is that the Nikon heritage is so rich in innovative engineering and design that the story bears telling and, hopefully, adds a stitch or two to that rich tapestry.
The story began in 1997 [...]” p. 47

THE MUSICAL BOX OF MICHAEL PUTLAND, IMAGES FROM HIS ARCHIVE, by Gray Levett

“The first time I heard Black Sabbath I was working at N. Hartle Photographic, a camera shop in Bournemouth on the south coast of England. I was on my lunch break with the radio playing in the background. Suddenly my attention was arrested by something very different, a wild explosion of sound that jumped out of the speakers like a screaming banshee. It was called Paranoid by Black Sabbath and was released in 1970 off the band's second studio album Paranoid. [...]”. p. 44

In her article “A Force of Nature”, interviews some of the commended and award winning photographers and looks at their fantastic images from one of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibits hosted by London's Natural History Museum.

Here's a highly commended photo by Ellen Cuylaerts , titled “Liquid Silver”.

“For this image, Ellen Cuylaerts (Belgium) was surrounded by schools of glittering silversides evading their predators. In summer, thousands of silversides arrive from deeper waters to lay their eggs on the sandy shores around Grand Cayman in the Caribbean.

By day they hide in the caverns and tunnels of grottos between coral reefs, but even here they are not free from danger, as predatory tarpons lurk there too. The moment Ellen learnt the silversides were back, she grabbed her diving gear. With the schools of the small fish zipping apart to let the larger Atlantic tarpons through, Ellen recalls how it felt like 'swimming through silver curtains'. (issue 78, p. 37)

This photo was taken by Joe McNally Photography , who's one of the most famous Nikon ambassadors. It appeared in issue 77, in a book review by Becky Danese where she decides it's a must read for anyone interested in photography.

The book is non other than “THE REAL DEAL - Field Notes from the Life of a Working Photographer”, where Joe writes:

“Revel in the sound of the shutter — it is the exclamation point at the end of the sentence, ‘I am a photographer!’ Understand that being a photographer still requires you to take a walk, whilst others labor seated at computers. Accept the glorious fact that what you do today with a camera will almost certainly be inconsequential, but that sliver of hope still gleams in your head and heart that
the next frame is the one. And the beautiful thing is, whenever you pick up a camera, there will be a next frame. And it might just be…'iconic'.”

Here's an excerpt from issue 80

This advert emanates an unusual atmosphere; as if it was from a far off place quite different from what we know, or perhaps not from this time directed at a much earlier generation... Well, Nikon F (first SLR)* appeared in 1959 and was a key milestone in camera development. It's next model, Nikon F-501, introduced in 1986, was the first successful autofocus SLR.

We're curious to know if you ever had one of Nikon F series and what did you think about it? Let us know in the comments.

*Single-Lens Reflex camera, is a type of camera that uses a mirror and prism system to allow the photographer to view the scene through the lens and see exactly what will be captured.
