We were delighted to host a special sold-out Nikon Open Day on Friday, 5th June, featuring acclaimed street photographer Lucy Hamidzadeh, pictured outside the shop with Gray Levett.

Based in South East London, Lucy is a highly respected street photographer whose work is rooted in storytelling. Her evocative and transportive images capture the character, atmosphere, and human stories of London's streets, as well as the destinations she visits around the world.

The event gave guests the opportunity to get hands-on with the latest Nikon equipment, test selected loan gear, and speak directly with Nikon specialist Bruno Murari. Throughout the day, attendees were able to explore new products, discuss techniques and camera settings, and receive expert advice on a wide range of photographic topics.

A highlight of the day was Lucy's workshop, Street Photography: Noticing the Unnoticed. Drawing on her years of experience, Lucy shared valuable insights into the art of street photography, including how to read a scene, anticipate decisive moments, and create compelling images from everyday life. Her engaging presentation inspired photographers of all levels to look more closely at the world around them and develop their own visual storytelling skills.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success. We would also like to thank Lucy Hamidzadeh and Nikon for their support and expertise, which made this memorable event possible: https://www.lucyhamidzadeh.com/

Nikon in the Movies!

In The Bridges of Madison County (1995), Clint Eastwood famously used a black Nikon F while portraying a National Geographic photographer — and he directed the film too.

The on-screen photography was created by award-winning photographer Ken Regan, while Eastwood’s Nikon F — often nicknamed the “Nikon F Clint Eastwood” — became a legend of its own, later appearing at auction.

This incredible portrait was captured last month on Hornøya, a tiny island far above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway — home to a huge breeding colony of S**gs and Puffins. 🖤🐦

The photographer wanted to create a head-on, eye-to-eye portrait that highlighted the S**g’s striking features, especially those mesmerizing emerald-green eyes. In his opinion, these fascinating birds, often overlooked by wildlife photographers, reveal an entirely different character up close — strange, beautiful, and almost dragon-like in appearance.

Captured brilliantly by talented nature photographer
📸 Shot on Nikon Z8 + Nikon 500mm PF lens

But what do you think of these birds? If you’ve ever photographed S**gs or Puffins, share your shots or experiences in the comments below — we’d love to see them! 📷✨

Inside Issue 59: the rare Nikon “Sky” (or “Cloud”) Camera ☁️📷

Built in 1938 — a full decade before Nippon Kogaku (Nikon) released its first production camera, the Nikon One 35mm rangefinder — this extraordinary camera was designed for meteorological photography and cloud-cover measurement.

Known today as the Nikon Sky Camera, it featured the Fish-eye-Nikkor 16.3mm f/8 lens with an incredible 180° field of view. The camera could capture up to 12 circular 50mm images of the entire sky on 6×6cm 120 roll film.

A fascinating piece of Nikon history and an early glimpse into the future of fisheye photography.

The “A Salute from the Past” series explores a fascinating collection of vintage photographic advertisements. One standout image on page 54 comes from More than a Snapshot: A Visual History of Photo Wallets by Annabella Pollen.

The book looks back at more than a century of photo wallets — the colourful illustrated envelopes once used by film processors to return your developed photographs. Long before instant previews and smartphones, you’d wait days, sometimes weeks, to discover whether you’d captured the perfect memory… or just your finger over the lens.

Featuring wallets from the 1900s to the 1990s, the book offers a nostalgic glimpse into Britain’s photographic history, from family snapshots and holiday memories to the rise of camera ownership after WWII. A beautiful reminder of a slower, more uncertain — and perhaps more magical — era of photography. 📷✨
