Passengers travelling through Gloucestershire should check their journeys ahead of planned rail improvement works in the Cheltenham and Tewkesbury areas this month.

Network Rail will carry out track renewals and maintenance during the weekends of 10–11 and 17–18 October, with replacement buses operating on some routes.

🚆 Welcome Points rollout brings accessible support to more stations

A national rollout of Welcome Points is underway, providing passengers with a clear place to find journey information and access support at stations across England.

Following a trial at 37 stations, which saw more than 31,000 visits, 93% of customers said they were satisfied, while 99% of disabled customers reported a positive experience.

The initiative has been shaped by passengers and disability-led organisations, with frontline railway colleagues also being prepared to support passengers using the new facilities.

A positive step towards making rail travel more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

🚄 Major milestone reached on HS2’s Wendover green tunnel

HS2’s 1.4km green tunnel at Wendover has reached a major construction milestone, with the two halves of the central structure now joined together.

The cut-and-cover tunnel is being built alongside the A413 and will help reduce noise and disturbance for local residents while blending the railway into the surrounding landscape.

🔹 2,740 precast concrete segments make up the structure
🔹 More than 2,000 segments have been installed in less than 18 months
🔹 1.2 million cubic metres of material, mainly chalk, was excavated
🔹 Work now moves on to the portals, internal fit-out, backfilling and landscaping

The tunnel is being delivered by EKFB, the HS2 main works contractor for the central section of the route.

🚆 One month to go: major upgrades for the West Highland Line

Network Rail is just one month away from starting a major programme of improvements designed to make the West Highland Line more reliable and resilient.

The £13m programme will include:

🔹 More than 4km of track renewals
🔹 Drainage and culvert improvements
🔹 Bridge maintenance and removal of a redundant bridge
🔹 Vegetation clearance between Fort William and Arisaig

The works will take place between Helensburgh, Fort William and Mallaig, helping protect this vital route for local communities, businesses and visitors.

Buses will replace trains between Crianlarich and Fort William/Mallaig from 9–17 November while the work takes place.

🚆 £7.1m rail upgrade programme completed between Newcastle and Scotland

Network Rail has completed a major programme of improvements along the East Coast Main Line, helping strengthen the reliability and resilience of the route.

The three-weekend programme included:

🔹 More than 3.2km of new track
🔹 Eight sets of points renewed or refurbished
🔹 1.5km of overhead line equipment renewed
🔹 Drainage upgrades and more than four miles of drainage cleared
🔹 Vegetation management and essential safety inspections

The improvements are designed to reduce the risk of flooding and infrastructure failures while supporting smoother, more reliable journeys for passengers and freight customers.

🚉 400,000+ journeys in just 100 days!

Cambridge South has already welcomed more than 400,000 passenger journeys since opening on 28 June.

The new station is helping connect passengers with Cambridge Biomedical Campus, as well as destinations including London, Birmingham, Stansted Airport and Norwich.

At the current rate, Cambridge South could see around 1.6 million journeys in its first year.

🚆 GB Railfreight signs 11-year agreement with 7 Steel UK

GB Railfreight has agreed a new long-term deal to transport scrap steel into 7 Steel UK’s Cardiff operations and deliver finished steel products, including rebar and coiled steel, to customers across the UK.

The agreement will also expand GBRf’s on-site shunting operations, with two new sets of purpose-built scrap wagons due to be introduced in 2027.

The deal strengthens a partnership that has already lasted more than 15 years and highlights the important role rail freight plays in supporting UK industry and more sustainable supply chains.
