“As a gay boy black metal was just a huge no go”
is the big, bright and beautiful essay collection exploring black metal’s complex relationship with its q***r subcultures.
In it, LGBTQ writers, memoirists, journalists, artists and academics explore what it means to find community, camaraderie and inspiration in the midst of a scene infamous for hard right-politics, racism and homophobia.
In Issue #6 we sat down with editors Daniel Lukes and Stanmir Panayotov for a chat.
On Friday September 27, Daniel and Riitta Valijarvi are hosting a conference - Ultimate Outsider Genre: Metal, Diversity, Activism.
This is an interdisciplinary conference bringing together scholars, writers, and musicians, for a day of dialogue on how extreme metal music is meeting today’s world on fire.
From a variety of perspectives (from feminist/q***r theory to environmentalism, sociology to aesthetics, activism and community-building) it will discuss and strategize how extreme metal can be a vehicle for raising consciousness and creating social change, towards a politics of inclusion, care, and anticapitalist futures.
