Captain’s day was a great success for golf club

⛳ It was a day of close competition, good food and fundraising at Congleton Golf Club, as 75 players took part in the annual Captain’s Day.

Stuart Sutton claimed the title after a card play-off — but one player faced a rather different challenge, managing all 18 holes without losing the ball he started with!

The day also raised £325 for The Joshua Tree and Congleton Golf Club.

People need to comment on local plan: councillors

🏘️ Alsager residents are being urged to have their say on potential housebuilding and employment sites — but councillors fear too few people will respond before the deadline.

The consultation closes on 1st September, and Cheshire East has confirmed it will not extend the deadline despite requests from town councillors.

Oyez! All over bar the shouting in Biddulph

Thirteen town criers from across Britain will descend on Biddulph this weekend as the town hosts the British Town Crier Championships.

Expect traditional regalia, booming voices and plenty of “Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!” as the competitors battle it out for the national trophy.

Fivefold rise in fines for fly-tipping is welcomed

🚮 Fly-tippers could now face fines of up to £5,000 under a major crackdown — and a Congleton councillor says it is a “very sensible decision”.

Eaton Bank celebrates Year 13 A-level results

🎓 A* grades, university places and big ambitions were celebrated at Eaton Bank Academy as Year 13 students received their results.

Among those celebrating was Seth Storer, who achieved A*s in biology and physics and As in chemistry and maths — and will now study medicine at Keele University with hopes of becoming a doctor.

Other students are heading off to study everything from physics and animal science to international relations, geography, history and archaeology.

Opinion split over Meta spy spex ban

A Biddulph councillor has questioned a pub chain’s decision to ban Meta smart glasses, saying technology should not be blamed for inappropriate videos being posted online.

Coun Jill Salt said the glasses could also be useful for capturing incidents such as crime, while warning against “kneejerk reactions”.

Lucy Pritchard reports on the debate.
