Not posted on here for a while. Today was slightly cooler in the workshop so got this little commission done. Two oak finials to replace a rather poorly looking original and a new lawnmower roller made from leadwood to give it some weight to replace the broken plastic version.

A slightly different commission for a returning customer to restore two sets of garden wind chimes that were looking a bit sorry for themselves. A bit of a redesign to the tops to prevent the rain from collecting on the what was previously a flat surface. Here are some before and after shots. Happy customer so great result. The turning bit was the easy part, restringing them was not so easy.

Boxwood chess pieces made for a commission to replace a couple that were missing. These were probably one of the hardest and most frustrating items I’ve made. Pleased it was just two pieces and not a whole chess set!! The gaps between the features were tiny, some too small to be able to accurately measure with callipers. A few failed attempts on the way, but got there in the end and a happy customer so that’s good.

The first of a few projects, octagonal Ash breadboard from online course that I’m doing. A first for me joining 10 separate strips to form a single board as I didn’t have two suitable planks to join. Planing flat with a super sharp plane and shaping the edges with a spoke shave, all in all quite satisfying. Will be finished with a food safe finish.

I inherited these two Stanley planes, a No 3 and No 4 several years ago and thought it was time to have a go at restoring them. So here are some before and after photos. What a difference! Also having just enrolled on a online furniture making course, the first part is tool preparation. Never knew that flattening of the planes bases was needed and also the backs of the blades. Do now! With the honing guide and the scary sharp 3M abrasive sheets, the shavings coming off them now is something only ever dreamed of. Result!

Resin patterned bowl in progress shots. Follow up to last post. Saw the idea in Woodturning Magazine made by several years ago and thought I would give it a go. Never worked with resin so that was quite fun. Thought I would try two resin pours using different colours. The wooden blocks in one of the pictures was my attempt to use less resin, but it leaked through so gave up on that idea.

Well this had taken some time to make but pleased with the end result after a few design changes along the way. The base is Elm, lid is Holly and finial is African Blackwood. In laid with black a metallic gold resin. Some progress photos to come. The pattern design was in Woodturning Magazine made by Sue Harker, several years ago so credit to her. I have adapted it slightly to give the finished item.
