We are sad that we can no longer say pick up your copy at Thackerays Butchers. But we want to say thank you. Thank you for everything you contributed to Consett and to the local High Street story.

A big thank you to J E Thackeray and Sons in Consett for stocking Consett Magazine for so many years. Their support helped us reach readers in the way local news should be shared. In the hands of local people inside a real local business at the heart of our town.

News coverage, including reporting by local media, confirmed that rising costs, reduced footfall and modern shopping habits had made trading incredibly difficult for the business. This is a significant moment for Consett. Losing a third generation family butcher is never just a business update. It is a cultural moment. It represents change in what our High Street looks like and feels like.

Thackerays played a real part in daily life. They served generations of families, they passed down knowledge through the family, and they created memories that span decades. There are customers in this town who can still recall the founder behind the counter.

We are also personally very grateful. When Consett Magazine was only two years old, Thackerays agreed to stock us. We were small and growing and they gave us space. Independent supporting independent. That kind of support matters more than most people ever see.
