🍷 Twelve years, and nearly every job on the site.

After more than 12 years at Greencroft Bottling in Annfield Plain, Shift Manager Stuwart Mawson knows the business from the ground up.

He started as a palletiser operator. Since then: depalletiser coordinator, line leader, Ancillary Supervisor, Bottling Supervisor, and now Acting Shift Manager.

"I've always started at the bottom and worked my way up. For me, that's important because it means you understand the business properly and appreciate the challenges people face in different roles."

Asked why he has stayed: "The people are good, the work is varied and every day brings a different challenge. Working alongside the lads and lasses on the shop floor is what I enjoy most."

Thinking of getting a plot? Autumn is when people start asking.

The Lanchester allotments have been going for more than 100 years, across the road from All Saints Parish Church. Thirty plots, £18 a year, and a waiting list, which tells you most of what you need to know.

It is not really about the vegetables. It is somewhere people of all ages swap advice, share seeds, get some fresh air and build friendships. The potatoes are a bonus.

"So lads take heed of the old tup's fate. Don't leave your action until it's too late, for like the tup we tend to slow. When you're getting old don't try too hard or you'll end like the tup in the knackers' yard."

The closing lines of The Old Tup, by Jimmy Anderson of Ebchester, who died on 13 August.

A welder by trade, a poet by inclination, and a familiar voice at events across the Derwent Valley for many years. His poem runs in full in this month's issue, alongside a tribute from Paul Heatherington.

🚗 Ghost plates, a growing threat to safer roads.

Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen writes for us this month on number plates deliberately altered so they cannot be read by ANPR cameras.

Criminals use reflective films, sprays or illegal lettering to make a vehicle effectively invisible to one of policing's most valuable tools. Alongside cloned plates, where offenders copy the identity of an innocent motorist's vehicle, they let criminals evade detection while victims deal with the fines, the penalties and the stress of proving their innocence.

Illegal plates are linked to organised crime, drug trafficking, vehicle crime, people smuggling and rogue trading.

If you suspect a vehicle is displaying an illegal or cloned plate, report it to Durham Constabulary on 101 or through the online reporting service. Anonymously, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

For almost 20 years Laura Ridgeon has been helping people improve their physical and mental wellbeing through gentle, accessible Hatha Yoga.

Based in Lanchester since 2009, she teaches friendly, beginner-friendly classes at Croft View on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, plus sessions in Esh Winning, monthly Yoga and Sound Baths, and retreats in Yorkshire and Spain.

With over 25 years of her own practice behind her, Laura understands first-hand how yoga can support body and mind through life's challenges. Movement, breathing and relaxation, at everyone's own pace.

More than 280 pedigree Holsteins go through the parlour at Langpark, twice a day, every day, all year. No weekends, no bank holidays, no snow days.

That is what the Bradley family have been doing around Lanchester for almost 60 years, and what Matthew and Ellie are taking on as Graeme and Hillary step back.

Liz Twist, MP for Blaydon and Consett, has backed Government plans for the biggest redesign of adult mental health services in a generation.

The Government has announced 159 new NHS facilities: 100 community mental health centres offering walk-in support without a referral, and 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments for people in crisis.

The MP, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Su***de and Self Harm Prevention, said: "Nobody should be left to struggle with their mental health alone. But every day, thousands of people are waiting months for help, then finding the only door open to them is a busy A&E."

According to the announcement, the first sites open this autumn, with more from March 2027.

At 18, he speaks for 46,000 young people.

By 18, Lanchester's Lucas Wainwright has already achieved more than many do in a lifetime.

After losing his left foot in an accident at three years old, Lucas has never allowed adversity to define him. Para-swimming, Scouting, student leader and mentor at St Bede's, founder of the Acutis Team helping younger pupils with digital skills.

Elected to the UK Youth Parliament, representing more than 46,000 young people across County Durham. Youth Ambassador to the Children's Commissioner for England, advocating particularly for young people with SEND and neurodivergence. Angel Award winner, Pope John Paul II Gold Award, Holocaust Educational Ambassador, and a Trustee of Stomping Grounds Forest School CIC.

Next up: a Policy and Public Affairs apprenticeship with Channel 4 in Leeds, alongside an offer from Durham University.

A remarkable young person, and someone whose greatest achievements may still be ahead.
