How you recover after a marathon is equally important to how you train and prepare.

The initial focus should be on helping the body recover. Sleep, hydration and ensuring you eat enough (carbs and protein) is essential. The body is recovering from micro trauma and cellular damage. It is depleted of energy stores and stress hormones are high.

In the weeks that follow it’s important to return to exercise and especially running slowly. Cross training that is low impact is a great place to start. A swim or cycle will help get your body moving but not overly stress it. The key here is to still prioritise sleep and recovery as the hormones in the body are still recovering. Yes, the post marathon blues is a thing!!

Around week 4-5, depending on your running experience and how you trained for your marathon you can start to reintroduce running and slowly build intensity and volume, if your body feels up to it.
Think of reverse taper there.

If anything is niggley or doesn’t feel right, seek out some support.

Physiotherapy can help woth post marathon massages, and assessment and treatment of any post running injuries. We can also help with recovery and planning a program for the next challenge or marathon.

If you need anything just ASK.
