London, 1990:

After a chance meeting, Bobby Gillespie asked Andrew Weatherall to remix Primal Scream’s new material.

The handoff happened via Alan McGee and Weatherall took the tapes to a tiny studio off Tottenham Court Road and reworked the tracks. Chopping up and spacing out, adding samples, Weatherall did his thing. Gillespie loved it, the ravers loved it - job done!

‘Loaded’ came out of the collaboration and instantly became a Balearic anthem. That remix didn’t just change the track it changed British music. Indie, acid house, dub, rock, it all blurred for a while after that.

England, 1992:

40,000 ravers followed the kick drums to Castlemorton Common.

No lineup, no permission, no phones. Just generators, DIY systems and a desire to surrender to the jungle, house and break-beats, to be together, and to dance freely.

The biggest illegal rave in UK history and the moment that made the government establishment s**t its pants!

London, 1994:

Pirate airwaves, squat raves, dub-plates, drum & bass is kicking off!

Two women step into a male dominated scene and change the game. Kemistry & Storm helped launch the Metalheadz label with a certain gold toothed chap named 'Clifford' and were crucial in running the legendary ‘Metalheadz at Blue Note’ night in Hoxton.

Kemistry & Storm were quickly elevated to serious heights of respect in the scene, not just for their ridiculous selection and technical skills but for the immense work ethic and contribution to drum & bass.

Manchester, 1987:

A young and very nervous Laurent Garnier steps into the Hacienda DJ booth for the first time under the name DJ Pedro.

A mixtape had found its way to Paul Cons and Laurent received the call soon after.

It was his big break and bonded him to the UK rave scene eternally.

Laurent would later head back to France with a head (and record boxes) full of Acid and help start the European techno movement!

New York, 1987:

On a humid September night, Larry Levan played the final Saturday Mass set at the legendary Paradise Garage, a crucial downtown New York space for dance, art and free expression since 1967.

No one spoke that night they just danced through soul, gospel, Italo and the early rumblings of house music until the lights came up for the last time.

The end of a club and the end of an era for a truly special resident.

London, 1991:

Bagleys opens in a former warehouse behind King’s Cross station. Raw and unpolished, it was all about the music and vibe. Concrete floors, scaffold bars, sweat dripping from the ceiling and a powerful sound system.
It became home to legendary nights like Freedom, Garage Nation and Telepathy.
Jungle, techno, speed garage and house all pulsed through the maze of rooms long before the bland redevelopment plans and shopping complex rolled in.
Bagleys kept the underground dream alive for many ravers throughout the 90s and beyond.

Manchester, 1991:

DJ Paulette was invited to become a resident for FLESH at The Haçienda by promoter Paul Cons.

That invitation placed her right at the heart of one of the UK’s most influential q***r parties, where she helped shape the sound and culture of the era blending house, techno, and hi-NRG with pure passion and love for the scene forming around her.

Paulette never looked back.

She went on to hold residencies at iconic clubs like Heaven and Ministry of Sound, and today continues to deliver her sound to global dancefloors and over the airwaves.

Ibiza, 1994:

Jose Padilla would focus on the horizon as he played almost every night at Cafe Del Mar allowing the sky to influence his selections and slowly building his set to the moment the sun kissed the ocean.

It was an Ibiza ritual and a major influence on the Balearic style and approach to music.

That same year he compiled the first-ever Café del Mar compilation, kicking off a legendary series and establishing the true sound of Balearic ‘Chill Out’.

Berlin, 1991:

The original Tresor was set up in a bombed-out department store vault by a crew of underground party starters led by Dimitri Hegemann, two years after the Wall fell.

The vibe reflected the setting - raw, industrial and relentless. Thick concrete walls, steel bars, no VIP, no frills. Just a big system and hard techno all night long (from Europe and the US).

The walls and ceiling would drip with sweat like the place was alive as the club's regulars danced until time no longer had meaning!

Chicago, ‘85: At the Muzic Box, DJ Ron Hardy played a then unreleased track by Phuture (DJ Pierre and Spanky) four times in a single marathon set. The first play cleared the floor, but on the fourth spin, the crowd were losing their minds! Hardy dubbed the record “Acid Tracks,” and the acid house movement was born.

Ibiza, ‘87: DJ Alfredo had thousands dancing under the stars at the open air Amnesia. It was ritualistic and some would even strip naked and make love right there on the dancefloor as the sun came up. It was pure Balearic hedonism that sparked a generation of ravers across Europe.
