When people think about autism, they often think about behaviour.

What autism looks like.

But living as an autistic person isn’t just about what other people can see.

It’s the constant calculations happening in your head.

The effort of trying to work out what people mean or are thinking.

The exhaustion that comes from masking all day.

The sensory overwhelm that can make everyday tasks feel impossible.

And for me now…the relief of finally understanding myself more.

For me, autism isn’t just a list of deficits.

It’s a different way of experiencing the world.

And since I’m trying to stop fighting that difference, I’m starting to find more compassion for myself, I’m sure it’ll take a while but I’m relearning to give myself more grace and trying to unlearn being so hard on myself.

If you could describe autism in one word, what would it be?

There’s going to be a lot of real talk on this page. I’m going to open up about the struggles we experience as a family and share how and why we decided to go for formal diagnosis’s for our ADHD, autism and dyslexia.

So I thought I’d start with something light straight after my intro 🐸

When people talk about autism, they often focus on the struggles.

The overwhelm.
The anxiety.
The burnout.
The daily invisible struggle is real.

But autism isn’t only those things.

One of my strongest childhood memories is my fascination with frogs.

I didn’t just like them.

I wanted to know everything.

The different species.
Their habitats.
Their life cycles.

I could happily spend hours learning and talking about them.

Looking back, that wasn’t a random childhood phase.

It was a special interest.

And honestly? It brought me so much happiness growing up.

Autistic people deserve to talk about joy as much as we talk about challenges.

What was your childhood special interest? I’d LOVE to hear it!!

A quick into 👋🏽

This page isn’t about perfection, it’s just me, Ria, documenting what’s it’s like living with ADHD and autism and raising babes the same. We’re figuring it out together as we go along and sharing the experience with you ✨
