Taking photographs is not a crime

Taking photographs is not a crime Increasingly we are seeing photographers being abused, questioned, & 'inconvenienced' by Police and

OK, so lets start with the basics - yes, of course you can do lots of illegal things with a camera - in much the same way that any of us could go out and do something illegal with a flip-flop, a dustbin or a duck! - but that is not what this is all about - it is about the underlying current of mistrust in people who chose to carry, or use, a camera day to day (y)

We welcome your links, stories, and opinions on the current position for photographers, individuals that are, in the vast majority of cases, not terrorists, perverts, or law breakers - just photographers doing what they enjoy. We would also appreciate it if you would share our page, please pass the word to your facebook friends and contacts, thanks! We would also, of course highlight that we are not ‘anti-police. ‘anti-security’ etc, the vast majority of these individuals are conscientious, honest individuals doing their best to do a good job. What we do object to is those that misuse, misinterpret, or otherwise fail to play by the rules. To regard all those that we come in contact with as ‘evil’ would be like hating all Doctors because of Harold Shipman, or all singers because of Justin Bieber. Remembering the late Linda McCartney, (née Eastman) who was born on this day, September the 24th, in 1941.

Linda was the first female photographer to have an image published as the cover of the influential music magazine Rolling Stone, a staff photographer for 'Town & Country,' magazine, and became a regular fixture at the legendary Fillmore East music venue in New York.

Linda is pictured here with her Nikon F in an image taken by musician Eric Clapton in 1967.

You can read more about Linda's photography, and see samples of her work, in the link that I'll add in the comments section. ........

Today's camera from the collection is the Nikon F-401s.

Dating from 1987 it was designed as an entry level auto focus SLR.

Despite this it had many features later found on higher end consumer models such as built in motor-wind, integrated handgrip, pop-up TTL flash, and perhaps most notably it was the first entry level SLR to have a thumb wheel control (as opposed to a lens ring) to alter aperture - a feature which was to become the most common selection method on later cameras.

Happy Wednesday all, and if you were out and about with your camera today - hope it went well 👍 ....

On this day, September 23, in 1930, Johannes Ostermeier was granted a patent on the first commercially available photographic flashbulb, the Vacublitz, manufactured in Berlin, Germany.

Link to the full patent in the comments for anyone that fancies a longer read 😉

That's one great product name if you ask me. 👌....

23rd September 2026.

Happy equinox all.

Earlier today we passed the Autumnal equinox the astronomical start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere (and, of course, the spring in the Southern Hemisphere)

An image taken from my garden gate to mark the day.

So about 101 years ago (well it feels like about that 😏) when I was seventeen I had a Saturday job in a very well respected, independent, UK photographic store.

One morning I served a customer that came in to collect his 110 prints & negatives (and get his free film - remember the free films?)

Ten minutes or so later he returned with a face the colour of a Leica red dot, spitting fire, and demanding to see the manager.

Apparently I had 'put his film in the machine backwards or something' (say, what? 😏)

The irate customer went on to demand that they were 'redone correctly'

The issue? - he received 24 (out of focus) images of the side of his head, his ear, and the world behind him - yup, he'd been looking through the wrong end of the viewfinder 🤣

Happy Tuesday all, and if you are out and about with your camera today - I trust that you will remember which end to look through 😉

Today's camera from the collection is this Eura.

Manufactured in Italy by Ferrania in 1959 it is a 120 film camera producing 6x6 negatives.

It has a simple meniscus lens with front element manual focus, offering a single shutter speed (1/30 second) and a choice of F8 & f12 apertures. It has a cold shoe, PC flash socket and tripod socket (the latter being useful when you only have 1/30 as a shutter speed 😉)

Simply made this budget medium format camera is of plastic and aluminium construction.

Despite it's simplicity it is still capable of pleasing results - here is a sample set of images by Pearlgirl77:

Happy Tuesday all, and if you were out and about with your camera today - hope it went well 👍

'𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝘁'

A 1948 image by the late photographer Henry Ries who was born on this day, September the 22nd, in 1917.

German born, and Jewish, Ries left his home country to escape the rising persecution of members of his religion - moving to the US where he joined the armed forces, working as an aerial photographer.

Following WW2 he carved a career as a photojournalist.

The image used here is one of his best known - having later being used by the US postal service in the creation of a commemorative postage stamp.

You can read more about his life and see samples of his work via the link that I'll post in the comments section. ......

Happy Independence Day 🇧🇬

Today, the 22nd of September, is Independence Day in Bulgaria.

For the Bulgarian people it marks a significant moment of freedom and pride. It marks the day that Bulgaria declared its full independence from the Ottoman Empire, elevating itself from a principality to a kingdom.

The proclamation took place in the historic town of Veliko Tarnovo, a location deeply tied to the nation’s medieval, spiritual, and cultural past.

A quick image by myself, taken in the fields above Veliko Tarnovo, to mark the day.

Whatever your day brings you - enjoy 👍
