When we launched ShoutAbout Kids – North East School Holiday Events & Activities, we were overwhelmed by the response! ❀️

The page was created because, over the summer holidays, there are hundreds of family events, activities and days out happening across the North East. Rather than filling our local pages with children's events every day (and pushing local news further down your feed), we wanted a dedicated place to share them all.

To celebrate the launch, we gave away two Peter Rabbit: Tales on the Tyne Trail Map & Sticker Books... but thanks to all your entries, we've decided to make it THREE winners instead! πŸ₯³

πŸ›οΈ Cramlington MP Emma Foody remains in government following Andy Burnham’s reshuffle.

Emma Foody has retained her role in government as a Whip and has been appointed Vice Chamberlain of His Majesty’s Household.

The role is part of the Government’s Whips’ Office, helping to organise government business in Parliament and ensure MPs support government legislation.

The appointment comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced his first ministerial reshuffle, with Emma Foody remaining part of the government team.

She’s the MP for Cramlington and Killingworth, having been elected in 2024.

If you’re looking for something to do today, why not head along to Cramlington Conservation Day at Manor Walks?

Running from 10am to 2pm, the event is a chance to meet some of the local environmental groups working to protect wildlife and make Cramlington a greener place to live.

You’ll be able to find out more about conservation projects in the town, chat with local volunteers and discover how you can get involved.

πŸ›Ή Work begins on Β£350,000 Cramlington skatepark transformation

Work is now underway on a brand new Β£350,000 skatepark at Alexandra Park in Cramlington.

The existing skatepark has closed while specialist contractor Wheelscape Ltd carries out the redevelopment, which is being funded through Northumberland County Council’s Cramlington Regeneration Fund in partnership with Cramlington Town Council.

The council has acknowledged that closing the skatepark during the summer holidays isn’t ideal, but says the work needs to happen now to avoid delays and deliver a modern new facility as quickly as possible.

The redesigned skatepark will be aimed at a wider range of ages and abilities, giving more people the chance to enjoy wheeled sports.

While work is taking place:
πŸ›Ή The recently opened pump track will remain open.
⚽ The park’s MUGA and activity trail will also stay open.
πŸ“Ή The site will be monitored by 24/7 CCTV throughout the construction period.

Councillors say they are looking forward to seeing the new skatepark open later this year, with further updates and a reopening date to be announced in due course.

πŸ“Š Crime in Cramlington remains below last year's levels despite slight rise

The latest neighbourhood policing figures show that overall crime in Cramlington remains lower than it was during much of last year, despite a small increase in recent months.

The most commonly reported offences during May 2026 were:

πŸ”Ή Violence and sexual offences: 98 reports
πŸ”Ή Anti-social behaviour: 91 reports
πŸ”Ή Shoplifting: 46 reports
πŸ”Ή Criminal damage and arson: 39 reports

The latest figures show recorded crime is still below the levels seen across much of summer and autumn 2025, although there has been a gradual increase since the seasonal low recorded in January.

The data relates to crimes reported to police and recorded within the Cramlington neighbourhood policing area. It does not necessarily reflect convictions or identify the exact locations where offences took place.

Overall, the longer-term trend suggests crime levels in Cramlington remain relatively stable and below where they were this time last year. πŸ“ˆ

Police officer who died after A189 collision near Cramlington remembered at moving funeral

PC Jess Turnbull, the Northumbria Police officer who died after being struck by a car while responding to a collision on the A189 near Cramlington last month, has been remembered at a full ceremonial funeral.

The 19-year-old’s life was celebrated at Newcastle Cathedral, where family, friends, colleagues and representatives from police forces across the UK gathered to pay tribute. A ceremonial procession led the service before a private funeral at West Road Crematorium.

Jess joined Northumbria Police last September, following in the footsteps of her father, Andy, who also served with the force. Her name has now been added to the force’s memorial at its headquarters in Wallsend.

In a heartfelt statement, Jess’ family thanked everyone who had supported them since her death, saying the kindness shown by colleagues, friends and communities across the North East had helped them through β€œthe most difficult time of our lives.”

Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine said Jess had made β€œthe ultimate sacrifice in serving our communities” and that her dedication to public service would never be forgotten.

Northumberland’s last full-time police custody suite closes after review

Northumberland no longer has a routinely operating police custody suite after Northumbria Police confirmed the closure of the custody facility at Bedlington.

The decision follows a review by the force, which said the suite was not the most effective or efficient use of resources. The cells will be retained as a resilience facility, meaning they can still be used in exceptional circumstances if needed.

People arrested in much of Northumberland who require detention will now generally be taken to custody suites elsewhere in the force area, including Middle Engine Lane in North Tyneside. Some detainees from parts of west Northumberland were already being taken to Newcastle before the change.

The closure has prompted debate about policing across Northumberland, with supporters of the move pointing to efficiency, while critics have raised concerns about longer transport times for officers and detainees.
