The Wistaston Community News and Events is a local group of dedicated volunteers responsible for organizing and hosting events within the village of Wistaston. In addition to our five main events, we also manage the 100 club lottery and assist in the publication and distribution of the increasingly popular Roundabout magazine. Our events include the Village Summer Fete, Flower and Produce Show, Mo
del Boat and Duck Race, Fireworks Display, and the Christmas Concert. The first event of the calendar year is the highly anticipated Village Summer Fete in June, held on the field at Wistaston Church Lane Academy. This event, which can be traced back to at least 1877, has been running in itsβ current form since 1984 when the village fete was merged with St Marys Church Rose Queen Parade and Fete. Typically, the fete features a variety of local and charity stalls, classic car displays, and performances by local groups in addition to the Parade and Rose Queen crowning. This family-friendly event offers a relaxed atmosphere and a range of categories, including flower arranging, baking, photography, crafts, and a childrenβs category. Refreshments are available for purchase, and a raffle is held. The Model Boat and Duck Race takes place in September. This enjoyable family event offers prizes for the best-decorated boats. Ducks and Model Boats are raced along the Brook at Joey the Swan, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes awarded to the winners. With entertaining stalls and activities on the field, this event is fun for the whole family. Tickets for the ducks can be purchased on the day. In November, we host a fireworks display at Eric Swan Sports Ground and Brittles Pavilion, located behind Wistaston Church Lane Academy school. Traditionally held in celebration of Guy Fawkes night, the evening also includes a pumpkin lantern and a fancy dress competition. The display grows more impressive each year and is always well-attended. Refreshments, including hot dogs, popcorn, and candyfloss, are available for purchase, and cash donations are accepted as entry. The Christmas Concert marks the festive conclusion of our calendar of events. It typically features a combination of performances by Wells Green Church Choir, Wistaston Church Lane School choir, Shavington Primary School Choir and in recent years the Swinging Woodpeckers. The concert is held at St. Mary's Church Hall, with refreshments available during the interval. Tickets can be purchased on the night. All events rely on the support of our wonderful volunteers from the local area, who assist with stewarding, table setting, tent assembly, and stall management, among other tasks. Our group is open, friendly, and inclusive, and we always welcome new members to join us, whether to help with organizing or simply to lend a hand on the day of an event.
