Skye Trail ⛰️🏕️🌲🥾🌊🏴
Last month I hiked the Skye Trail. I walked it over 7 days, starting off at an old Telephone box ☎️near Duntulm & ending in Broadford (just under 80 miles in total).
I used a variety of accommodation options including campsites, hostels, B&B & a wild camp on the last night before finishing up in Broadford.
The Skye trail was maybe one of the most challenging walks logistically I had done as a solo hike. I think the planning/logistics may have been as much effort as the walk itself 🤣
For the first 4 days I would drive to the end of my destination for that day & get public transport to the start. Stagecoach has a great bus service in Skye, well apart from on a Sunday when there’s no busses, oops 😆 I did manage to get a lift from a kind Canadian who was heading to Portree from Sligachan 😀.
I was starting to wonder if I would have been better off wild camping, rather than having to coordinate public transport & accommodation options. I did a bit of wild camping towards the end of the route which I enjoyed, well apart from taking 2 hours out of my way to find a suitable spot!
The Skye trail is a good way to see parts of Skye that are off the beaten track & not accessible by car. It’s an unofficial trail so it’s not way marked. I found it fairly easy to navigate though I was using GPS & had a map as backup 🧭, it is a fairly popular trail which helps but a hell of a lot quieter than the WHW (which is no bad thing). Some days are easier than others, Flodigarry to the Storr being one of the harder days with 1750m of ascent⛰️ over 10-11 hours - the next 2 days felt like days off in comparison 🤣 Amazing views / experience despite the 40+ changes of weather that day. ☔️💨🌤️
There are a few fairly mundane bits on the Skye trail where you’re having to walk along single track roads or bits where the views are quite featureless however the rewards for preserving outweigh the effort (or atleast I thought so! 😀). You get some amazing views on trail, the Cuillins, Storr, the Trotternish ridge & Glen Sligachan to mention a few.
